According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmo-free-regions.org\/fileadmin\/pics\/gmo-free-regions\/conference_2023\/23-09-07_GMOfree-Regions_BfN_Engelhard.pdf\">German Federal Nature Protection Agency, <\/a>over 94% of current new GMO applications would fall under category 1. <\/p>\n\n<p>The European Network of Scientists for Social and Environmental Responsibility (ENSSER) <a href=\"https:\/\/ensser.org\/publications\/2023\/statement-eu-commissions-proposal-on-new-gm-plants-no-science-no-safety\/\">warned <\/a>that the Commission\u2019s criteria used to determine equivalence to conventional plants is not based on science and is not a guarantee that category 1 new GMOs are safe.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Commenting on the decision, Greenpeace GMO campaigner Eva Corral said<\/strong>: <em>\u201c<\/em><em>It is encouraging that governments didn\u2019t reach an agreement on such an unacceptable proposal. European governments must now proceed with negotiations to ensure all new GMOs are safety checked, traceable and labelled.
