{"id":46925,"date":"2024-01-24T13:20:00","date_gmt":"2024-01-24T12:20:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/eu-unit\/?p=46925"},"modified":"2024-01-24T13:23:37","modified_gmt":"2024-01-24T12:23:37","slug":"mep-backing-for-gmo-deregulation-threatens-rights-of-farmers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/eu-unit\/issues\/nature-food\/46925\/mep-backing-for-gmo-deregulation-threatens-rights-of-farmers\/","title":{"rendered":"MEP backing for GMO deregulation threatens rights of farmers"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Brussels <\/strong>&#8211; The European Commission proposal on new GMOs, and amendments supported today by the European Parliament\u2019s environment committee, risk violating the rights of farmers and consumers, according to new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/eu-unit\/issues\/nature-food\/46914\/draft-eu-law-on-new-gmos-threatens-legal-rights-of-farmers-faces-ecj-rejection\/\">legal analysis<\/a> by Greenpeace.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2024\/01\/0c0a1969-gp1sv3v0_low_res_with_credit_line.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-46926\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2024\/01\/0c0a1969-gp1sv3v0_low_res_with_credit_line.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2024\/01\/0c0a1969-gp1sv3v0_low_res_with_credit_line-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2024\/01\/0c0a1969-gp1sv3v0_low_res_with_credit_line-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2024\/01\/0c0a1969-gp1sv3v0_low_res_with_credit_line-510x340.jpg 510w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<p>The proposed law does not provide sufficient protection against the contamination of crops with new GMOs, which are obtained through so-called new genomic techniques (NGTs).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Greenpeace EU GMO campaigner Eva Corral <\/strong>said:<em> \u201cDecades of progress in the EU on farmers&#8217; rights, and protecting people\u2019s health and the environment, should not be scrapped for the sake of biotech industry profits. Safety measures do not hinder innovation, nor do current rules that apply to GMOs. EU law does not prohibit research and development: it aims to ensure that what is developed does not breach EU citizens\u2019 rights to health and environmental protection.\u201d&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2024\/01\/ff2e8056-ngt-plants-proposal-grounds-of-invalidity-logo.pdf\">Greenpeace\u2019s legal analysis<\/a> shows that, if adopted, the law could violate a broad body of EU constitutional law, including several articles of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union (TFEU) and of the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights, because rules on safety checks, labelling and traceability are removed or watered down.
