The European Commission is doing far too little to avoid and prepare Europe for the dangers of water shortages and other major climate risks, warns Greenpeace.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2024\/03\/6dfa0f07-gp0stz30k_medium_res_with_credit_line-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-46987\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2024\/03\/6dfa0f07-gp0stz30k_medium_res_with_credit_line-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2024\/03\/6dfa0f07-gp0stz30k_medium_res_with_credit_line-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2024\/03\/6dfa0f07-gp0stz30k_medium_res_with_credit_line-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2024\/03\/6dfa0f07-gp0stz30k_medium_res_with_credit_line-510x340.jpg 510w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2024\/03\/6dfa0f07-gp0stz30k_medium_res_with_credit_line.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<p>The Commission\u2019s \u2018climate resilience\u2019 plans, due to be published on 12 March, are mostly devoid of concrete proposals, according to reporting in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2024-03-07\/europe-faces-3c-of-global-warming-here-s-how-it-plans-to-cope\">Bloomberg<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/pro.politico.eu\/news\/176681\">Politico<\/a>. The EU executive also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/green\/2024\/02\/15\/outrage-as-commission-accused-of-shelving-water-resilience-plan\">shelved a promised plan<\/a> specifically on water resilience, which it had intended to publish on the same day.<\/p>\n\n<p>Europe is set to suffer temperature increases <a href=\"https:\/\/news.un.org\/en\/story\/2023\/06\/1137867\">double that<\/a> of other continents, as the climate changes due to the burning of fossil fuels and the destruction of forests, oceans and soils. This leaves the continent and its inhabitants more vulnerable to the effects of a heating planet.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Greenpeace EU director Jorgo Riss<\/strong> said:<em> \u201cThe EU\u2019s environment experts are warning about \u2018short-term\u2019 climate disasters between now and 2040, but President von der Leyen can\u2019t even see past June\u2019s elections. Europe is woefully unprepared for the increase in droughts, wildfires, floods and storms \u2013 and instead of acting now, von der Leyen has delayed, diluted or dropped plans that could prevent such disasters. Only by urgently protecting soils, waterways and forests, and giving space to more natural habitats overall, can people in Europe hope to avoid the most dramatic climate impacts that are already heading down the tracks towards us.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Next steps<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>The European Commission is set to publish its \u2018climate resilience\u2019 plans on 12 March. Both the European Parliament\u2019s environment committee and the environment ministers of the EU\u2019s national governments are expected to discuss the Commission\u2019s proposal.
