From plastics to pesticides, Europe\u2019s politicians know that these products are harmful to the environment and people\u2019s health, but they\u2019ve chosen to put private profit above the wellbeing of vulnerable communities in other parts of the world. It\u2019s indefensible, and the EU must now act quickly to close these loopholes with a single, cross-cutting law.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Veblen Institute advocacy officer for trade policy reform, Stephanie Kpenou, said<\/strong>: <em>\u201cIt is high time to end this double standard, which violates the EU&#8217;s environmental and human rights commitments and discredits the ambitions of the Green Deal. This ethically unjustifiable situation is yet another illustration of how EU trade policy is often conceived and implemented without regard to its adverse impacts on climate, biodiversity and human rights.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/eu-unit\/issues\/democracy-europe\/47171\/report-toxic-double-standards-in-eu-trade\/\">joint briefing<\/a> documents how these hypocritical trade loopholes appear in current and proposed laws, including:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>2006 REACH Regulation (chemicals)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2009 Pesticides Regulation\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2009 Children\u2019s Toys Directive\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2019 Single-use Plastics Directive<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2023 Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2023 proposal for a Toy Safety Regulation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2024 AI Act\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>According to an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.publiceye.ch\/en\/topics\/pesticides\/banned-in-europe\">investigation by Public Eye<\/a>, in 2018 over 80,000 tonnes of pesticides containing substances banned within the EU were exported.<\/p>\n\n<p>In 2023, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/eu-unit\/issues\/nature-food\/46638\/eu-mercosur-banned-pesticides-found-on-brazilian-limes-in-eu\/\">Greenpeace Germany investigation<\/a> revealed that toxic pesticides exported from the EU to non-EU countries were sneaking back into Europe on agricultural produce such as limes, as a cocktail of toxins that could be dangerous for the health of European consumers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/echa.europa.eu\/documents\/10162\/1244645\/pic_article_10-2020_en.pdf\/7a756e7e-af68-250d-6cad-41769a1fcf37?t=1639388055700\">European Chemicals Agency<\/a>, in 2020 over 660,000 tonnes of hazardous chemicals banned or severely restricted in the EU were exported from the EU to other countries.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>The briefing also illustrates examples of existing EU legislation where the loopholes do not appear, and which provide precedent for action to close them. The EU regulation prohibiting goods produced with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.consilium.europa.eu\/en\/press\/press-releases\/2024\/03\/05\/council-and-parliament-strike-a-deal-to-ban-products-made-with-forced-labour\/?utm_source=x.com&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_campaign=20240305-forced-labour&amp;utm_content=carousel-card\">forced labour<\/a> and the EU regulation on <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/ip_24_679\">mercury<\/a> both cover exports from the EU to non-EU countries.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Corrections<\/strong>:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>An earlier version of this press release included a statistic published in <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/33287770\/\">BMC Public Health<\/a>, estimating that 385 million cases of acute pesticide poisonings occur each year. After receiving questions about the study\u2019s methodology which we were unable to answer in the time available to us, we chose to remove the statistic both from the text of the briefing and from this press release.
