Brussels, 29 November 2024 <\/strong>– In response to reports<\/a> that the European Union and the Mercosur bloc of South American countries (Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay) had concluded negotiations on a free trade agreement, Greenpeace EU trade campaigner Lis Cunha said<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n

\u201cThis is a tragic day for nature and climate, with geopolitical interests and corporate profits winning out over the wellbeing of this planet. This agreement is not only terrible for nature, it\u2019s unfair for Europe\u2019s struggling farmers who have rightly been out protesting in force all over Europe. EU policy makers would be fools if they agree to this toxic deal, renegotiated in haste behind closed doors. It is now crucial that all EU governments and all relevant parliaments at the national level get a chance to scrutinise and vote on this deal, as originally foreseen, without being bypassed at the last minute by the EU Commission through technical tricks.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n
