Brussels, 08 April 2025<\/strong> \u2013 Reacting to an announcement by the Copernicus Climate Change Service that March 2025 was the warmest ever March for Europe<\/a> and the second-warmest March globally, as well as the 20th month in the last 21 months for which global-average surface air temperature was more than 1.5\u00b0C above the pre-industrial level,<\/p>\n\n

Thomas Gelin, Greenpeace EU climate campaigner<\/strong>, <\/strong>said:<\/p>\n\n

\u201cAs early Spring weather starts to feel more and more like Summer, Europe is potentially on track to face ever harsher heat waves and wildfires later in the year. The past month\u2019s contrasting rainfall extremes across the European region alone pose an immediate challenge to our food systems and to the economy as a whole. Europe\u2019s citizens must not be left alone to pay for the chaos that dirty energy companies are fuelling.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n

\u201cIn recent months we\u2019ve seen oil and gas corporations increasing their plans to emit even more greenhouse gases, while ditching their already-meek climate commitments. Europe\u2019s governments should stop them from looking for more oil and gas, banning all new fossil fuel projects. Climate polluters like Shell, TotalEnergies, Equinor and ENI must pay for this climate crisis through significant new taxes to help communities at home and around the world rebuild from climate disasters and invest in climate solutions.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n
