At this point, the Commission has failed so many times that it\u2019s starting to feel like they must take their instructions from Samuel Beckett: try again, fail again, fail better. But not even a postmodern playwright could make sense of the fundamental contradictions of this environmentally-damaging deal. EU and Mercosur leaders must reject this toxic agreement and work instead to develop a truly sustainable and balanced relationship.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Waiting for EU-Mercosur<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>Over 25 years of secret negotiations, a wide range of global civil society groups have <a href=\"https:\/\/friendsoftheearth.eu\/press-release\/eu-celac-450-organisations-call-stop-toxic-eu-mercosur-deal\/\">repeatedly voiced steadfast opposition<\/a> and attempted to inform the public about the catastrophic impacts of a trade deal between the EU and Mercosur, a bloc of countries that includes Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay. The agreement\u2019s adoption would be particularly harmful and controversial for the Amazon rainforest, at a time in which the EU\u2019s anti-deforestation law has been repeatedly delayed and weakened.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>Revelations have included that the deal will: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2025\/06\/b95b586f-eudr_mercosur_legalbrief.pdf\">jeopardise the EU Deforestation Regulation<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/eu-unit\/issues\/climate-energy\/46974\/eu-mercosur-trade-deal-breaches-eu-climate-laws-legal-analysis\/\">breach EU climate laws<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/eu-unit\/issues\/pollution\/46816\/eu-mercosur-deal-to-boost-plastics-trade-a-set-back-for-global-plastics-treaty\/\">boost trade in plastics<\/a> and undermine efforts to agree a Global Plastics Treaty, facilitate the entry of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/eu-unit\/issues\/nature-food\/46638\/eu-mercosur-banned-pesticides-found-on-brazilian-limes-in-eu\/\">toxic cocktail of banned pesticides<\/a> into the EU, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/nl\/bossen-categorie\/69339\/jbs-profits-from-eu-mercosur-deal\/\">propel destructive agribusiness<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/eu-unit\/issues\/nature-food\/45443\/revealed-meat-sold-in-europe-driving-destruction-of-brazils-pantanal-region\/\">destroy precious ecosystems<\/a> in South America.<\/p>\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.etuc.org\/en\/document\/statement-etuc-and-ccscs-regarding-possible-conclusion-negotiations-eu-mercosur\">Trade unions<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beuc.eu\/press-releases\/eu-mercosur-trade-deal-likely-fail-both-consumers-and-farmers-sustainability-goals\">consumers<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/stopeumercosur.org\/\">human rights groups and environmental organisations<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/europeantradejustice.org\/open-letter-sia\/\">economists<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/eu-mercosur-trade-deal-threatens-indigenous-lands-activist-says-2023-06-29\/\">indigenous peoples<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.climatealliance.org\/fileadmin\/Inhalte\/1_About_us\/Resolutions\/CA-Resolution_EUMercosur_EN.pdf\">local municipalities<\/a> and other civil society organisations have criticised the agreement, not to mention the <a href=\"https:\/\/stopeumercosur.org\/\">more than 2 million EU citizens<\/a> who have signed petitions opposing it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>Stop EU-Mercosur, an alliance of more than 450 organisations in Europe and South America, has compiled <a href=\"https:\/\/stopeumercosur.org\/#resources\">a comprehensive and multilingual list of resources<\/a> on the many problems with this toxic deal.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Next steps<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>The unpopular deal continues to face determined opposition in Europe from countries such as France, Poland, Ireland, Hungary and Austria, as well as from a large number of MEPs.
