Brussels <\/strong>\u2013 The European Parliament has voted to refer the EU-Mercosur trade agreement to the European Court of Justice, requesting the Court\u2019s opinion on whether the deal is compatible with the EU treaties.<\/p>\n\n

The motion to refer the deal to the Court of Justice passed with 334 votes in favour, 324 votes against and 11 abstentions. <\/p>\n\n

Greenpeace EU campaigner Lis Cunha <\/strong>said: \u201cOnce again the European Parliament has made it clear that it has serious doubts about this toxic agreement. Given the many issues raised by legal experts, a review from the Court of Justice is essential. Now, the EU Commission and national governments must show respect for these concerns and wait for the Court\u2019s answer before moving ahead with ratification. It would be scandalous if the Commission pushed forward with unprecedented anti-democratic plans to provisionally apply the trade deal before the Parliament has given consent.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n
