The deal, which would set a ceiling of 15% tariffs on EU goods entering the US, in return for zero tariffs on US goods entering Europe, is also linked to a promise EU Commission President von der Leyen made that the EU would import <a href=\"https:\/\/policy.trade.ec.europa.eu\/news\/joint-statement-united-states-european-union-framework-agreement-reciprocal-fair-and-balanced-trade-2025-08-21_en\">$750 billion of US energy<\/a> by the end of 2028, mostly oil and gas.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"772\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2026\/03\/9a93d6aa-gp0su8h1g_medium-res-with-credit-line-1200px-1024x772.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-47935\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2026\/03\/9a93d6aa-gp0su8h1g_medium-res-with-credit-line-1200px-1024x772.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2026\/03\/9a93d6aa-gp0su8h1g_medium-res-with-credit-line-1200px-300x226.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2026\/03\/9a93d6aa-gp0su8h1g_medium-res-with-credit-line-1200px-768x579.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2026\/03\/9a93d6aa-gp0su8h1g_medium-res-with-credit-line-1200px-451x340.jpg 451w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2026\/03\/9a93d6aa-gp0su8h1g_medium-res-with-credit-line-1200px.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption><div class=\"credit icon-left\"> \u00a9 Tim Dirven \/ Greenpeace<\/div><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p>This decision comes as European gas prices spiked after Iran&#8217;s strikes on Qatar&#8217;s liquefied gas hub. As fossil fuel prices surge, Europeans are showing a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2026-03-18\/uk-german-consumers-seek-out-solar-evs-heat-pumps-due-to-iran-war?srnd=phx-industries-energy\">growing interest<\/a> in renewable energy to avoid price shocks, which countries like Spain <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/2026\/03\/11\/spains-renewables-revolution-likely-to-keep-energy-bills-low-even-as-gas-prices-soar\">with more renewables<\/a> have been more insulated from.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Greenpeace EU climate campaigner Thomas Gelin <\/strong>said:<em> \u201cEurope should have learnt the lesson from its disastrous reliance on Russia for energy \u2013 if you hand a stick to a bully they will beat you with it. Repeating the experiment with energy dependence on the US is foolish in the extreme. The EU made huge advances in renewables and cutting energy waste in response to Russia\u2019s aggression, and must repeat these wins and move to a fully renewable and efficient energy system that is more resilient to price shocks and supply shortages caused by incidents like the war in Iran. Promises to import fuels that are bad for the climate, bad for Europe\u2019s security and bad for people\u2019s bills should have no place in a deal with the US.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n<p>By 2025, the US already provided 27% of EU gas imports, which could grow to <a href=\"https:\/\/ieefa.org\/resources\/eu-risks-new-energy-dependence-us-could-supply-80-its-lng-imports-2030\">40% by 2030<\/a>. Greenpeace is warning that increased imports of energy products like oil, gas and nuclear from the US undermines Europe\u2019s safety and independence, as well as accelerating the climate crisis which the EU\u2019s own science advisers say will have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/eu-advisers-warn-catastrophic-global-warming\/\">devastating consequences<\/a> for the continent. The chair of the EU Parliament\u2019s trade committee has himself <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euractiv.com\/news\/brussels-us-energy-investment-pledges-totally-unrealistic-says-eu-parliament-trade-chief\/\">labelled<\/a> the energy import promises as \u2018totally unrealistic\u2019.<\/p>\n\n<p>Early this morning, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/eu-unit\/issues\/democracy-europe\/47931\/greenpeace-transforms-eu-hq-into-trump-tower\/\">activists projected<\/a> a golden facade and the words \u201cTRUMP TOWER\u201d onto the European Commission headquarters in Brussels, mimicking one of President Trump\u2019s skyscrapers, accusing EU leaders meeting today of capitulating to his demands.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Next steps<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>The whole Parliament will now vote on the deal in its plenary session, possibly on 25-26 March. Greenpeace is warning that the EU\u2019s dependence on fossil fuel imports, as well as accelerating the climate crisis, gives leverage to authoritarian governments over the EU, and puts European households at risk of volatile prices.
