On Wednesday, the European Commission failed to recommend a review of the EU\u2019s target to match commitments under the Paris climate deal of 2015.<br \/>\n<\/h4>\n<div>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"float: left; margin: 5px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2018\/08\/01feed61-01feed61-gp03gps_web_size_with_credit_line.jpg\" alt=\"Windturbines in Europe, Portugal 2012\" width=\"240\" height=\"160\">Germany, Austria, Belgium, Portugal and Luxembourg asked the European Commission to review the EU\u2019s carbon target to bring it line with the Paris deal. Ministers from the UK, France, Sweden, Greece and Denmark also called for the EU\u2019s efforts to be stepped up.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Greenpeace EU climate and energy policy adviser Bram Claeys<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>said:\u00a0\u201c<em>It may have surprised the Commission, but country after country has come out in support of stronger European efforts to tackle climate change. This should reboot Europe\u2019s climate ambition. It\u2019s a clear signal the Commission cannot ignore.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The EU\u2019s target to cut carbon emissions by at least 40 per cent (compared to 1990 levels) is based on an objective to limit temperature rise to 2\u00b0C.
