In the coming months, they want to authorise the cultivation of two GM maize varieties (DuPont Pioneer\u2019s 1507 and Syngenta\u2019s Bt11), and to renew the licence for another maize (Monsanto\u2019s maize MON810), the only GM crop currently grown in the EU.<br \/>\n<\/h4>\n<div>\n<div class=\"events-box middle-box left\">\n<div class=\"frame reset-padding\">\n        <a class=\"open-img EnlargeImage\" href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2018\/08\/a24d8515-a24d8515-gmo-optout-hr-map.jpg\" title=\"\"><br \/>\n            <img decoding=\"async\" id=\"ctl00_cphContentArea_Property3_ctl00_ctl02_Image1\" class=\"Thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2018\/08\/a24d8515-a24d8515-gmo-optout-hr-map.jpg\" alt=\"\" style=\"border-width:0px;\"><\/p>\n<p>        <\/a>\n    <\/div>\n<div class=\"hidden\">\n        <span class=\"date\"><\/span><br \/>\n        <strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The proposed authorisations would only be valid in 9 out of 28 European Union (EU) countries, as well as in three regions (England in the UK, Flanders and the Brussels region in Belgium). The rest of EU countries and the remaining four regions in the UK and Belgium were excluded under the EU\u2019s new <a href=\"http:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/food\/plant\/gmo\/authorisation\/cultivation\/geographical_scope_en.htm\">opt-out mechanism<\/a>. The Commission is hoping that EU governments will accept GM crops so long as they are not grown in their territories.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Franziska Achterberg, EU Food Policy Director for Greenpeace<\/strong>, said: \u201c<em>GM crops have no place in sustainable farming. Rightly, the majority of EU governments and parliamentarians have rejected them. But now it\u2019s time for all EU countries to think beyond their borders.
