{"id":999,"date":"2018-02-28T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2018-02-27T23:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/eu-unit\/uncategorized\/999\/efsa-confirms-pesticides-danger-to-bees\/"},"modified":"2019-11-06T09:33:57","modified_gmt":"2019-11-06T08:33:57","slug":"efsa-confirms-pesticides-danger-to-bees","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/eu-unit\/issues\/nature-food\/999\/efsa-confirms-pesticides-danger-to-bees\/","title":{"rendered":"EFSA confirms pesticides danger to bees"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>National governments must now back EU neonicotinoid ban, says Greenpeace<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"leader\">\n\tThree widely used neonicotinoid pesticides are a danger to bees, according to a report released today by the European Food Safety Authority, EFSA.<br \/>\n<\/h4>\n<div>\n<div class=\"events-box small-box left\">\n<div class=\"frame reset-padding\">\n        <a class=\"open-img EnlargeImage\" href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2018\/08\/fa2ab35d-fa2ab35d-bee_eco-farm_gp0stpa99_web_size_with_credit_line.jpg\" title=\"\"><br \/>\n            <img decoding=\"async\" id=\"ctl00_cphContentArea_Property3_ctl00_ctl02_Image1\" class=\"Thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2018\/08\/fa2ab35d-fa2ab35d-bee_eco-farm_gp0stpa99_web_size_with_credit_line.jpg\" alt=\"\" style=\"border-width:0px;\"><\/p>\n<p>        <\/a>\n    <\/div>\n<div class=\"hidden\">\n        <span class=\"date\"><\/span><br \/>\n        <strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Based on a review of over 700 studies on imidacloprid, clothianidin and thiamethoxam, EFSA confirms that these chemicals pose high risks to bees, and that EU restrictions imposed in 2013 are insufficient to control these risks.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>Franziska Achterberg, Greenpeace EU food policy adviser<\/strong><span>, said: <\/span><em>\u201cThe evidence is overwhelming that bees, and the crops and plants they pollinate, are at dire risk from neonicotinoid pesticides. National governments must stop dithering and back the proposed EU neonicotinoid ban as the first step to prevent the catastrophic collapse of bee populations.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>In March 2017, the European Commission<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/eu-unit\/en\/News\/2017\/Commission-takes-major-step-to-ban-three-neonics\"><span> <\/span><span>proposed a ban<\/span><\/a><span> on the three neonicotinoids, except when they are used in greenhouses. National governments will vote on this measure on<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2018\/08\/a73d543a-a73d543a-planning_sc_meetings_2018.pdf\"><span> <\/span><span>22 March<\/span><\/a><span>, following the postponement of a vote in December 2017.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.efsa.europa.eu\/en\/press\/news\/180228\">Today\u2019s review of the scientific evidence<\/a> is a result of partial EU restrictions, introduced in 2013, on the use of the three neonicotinoid pesticides in agriculture.
