BANGALORE, India — As a part of its ongoing global campaign to spread awareness about global warming and changing climate patterns across the world, “Solar Generation”, the youth wing of Greenpeace India organized a three-day long event at St. Joseph College in Bangalore that reflected the growing resistance of the younger generation towards climate changes happening around the world.

Solar Generation volunteers sharing a lighter moment at the event.

The three day long event began with the inauguration of the symbolic “Totem Pole” in the college premises on February 19. The second day was marked with the screening of documentaries, games, folk music performances by the students and a number of stalls with speak outs. “An Inconvenient Truth,” “India's Melting Glaciers”, “Changes in Climate, Changes in Life” were some of the documentaries that were screened as a part of the event.

“Solar Generation” consists of students from various colleges across the country and came into existence on February 16, 2005. Working together with Greenpeace these young breed of volunteers have been urging people to switch to non-conventional sources of energy such as the sun and wind to generate clean power without creating environmental pollution.

“This event has been organized to celebrate the third anniversary of the existence of Solar Generation in India. We at Greenpeace have marked the current year as an Energy Efficiency Year and this event is just the beginning in that direction” said Maitree Dasgupta, Junior Energy Campaigner, Greenpeace India.

The event also witnessed the launch of the symbolic Totem Pole in the college premises. “The Totem Pole is a part of our constant efforts to bring home the reality of climate change among people, particularly the student community. It is an embodiment of youth spirit and resistance. St. Joseph is its current halt and from here it will move on to other colleges in the city and then to international destinations until it makes a complete circle around the globe, urging people to stop burning fossil fuels and shift to cleaner sources of energy” she concluded.
