The tests went ahead but the protests gave birth to a new idea \u2013 Greenpeace.<br \/>45 years on, Greenpeace has a presence in over 55 countries around the world. We share the same core values of non-violence, bearing witness, personal action, internationalism and independence \u2013 we do not accept funding from governments or corporations.<\/p>\n<p>You can read more about Greenpeace activities around the world via their national or on the international website which links to national pages.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"timeline-item\"><span class=\"year\"> 1995-2000<br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Before Greenpeace India<\/h3>\n<p class=\"text-center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-india-stateless\/2018\/06\/Taj-Mahal-blue.jpg\" width=\"700\"><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Greenpeace India was founded in 2001. But our story goes back further to 1995 where grassroots activists <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from other Greenpeace offices started the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">idea of Greenpeace India in Delhi<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ideas are often more powerful than organisations.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The initial campaigns to stop western companies using India as a dumping ground for toxic waste (1995), the iconic hot air balloon protest near the Taj Mahal (1998) and the campaign against <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">toxic ship breaking in Gujarat<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> , gave us the momentum to get registered in India by May 2001.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"timeline-item\">\n<p><span class=\"year\"> 2001-2008<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>The early years<\/h3>\n<p class=\"text-center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-india-stateless\/2018\/06\/dow-clean-up-bhopal.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\"><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Looking back at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20041015195254\/http:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/india\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">old websites<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/india\/en\/press\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">press releases<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> evokes nostalgia from those early days. The <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/india\/en\/about\/Success-Stories\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">success stories<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &nbsp;of a very small office, campaigning on a wide range of issues ranging &nbsp;from Genetic Engineering to the dumping of toxic mercury waste at Kodaikanal (part of the corporate accountability ship tour &nbsp;in 2003). Not to mention promoting <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">clean energy and the solar generation<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and also mobilising support for the victims of Bhopal Gas Tragedy. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We could slowly create a niche for our work and register our presence in the development sector and the civil society of this country.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By 2006, Greenpeace India had established itself as an environment watchdog and a force to reckoned with. We had successfully senthe <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">toxic asbestos laden French warship &#8211; Clemenceau<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, back to France. The ship was seeking admission to recycle yards of Alang in Gujrat. We started a high profile campaign to save the turtles of Orissa (check out the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Olive Ridley turtle protests<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our supporter base was growing fast as more and more people in India were inspired to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">donate towards a green and peaceful future<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for our country. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"text-center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-india-stateless\/2018\/06\/turtleactiondelhi-2-e1529430077967.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\"><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"timeline-item\"><span class=\"year\"> 2009-2014<br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Campaigning and mobilisation<\/h3>\n<p class=\"text-center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-india-stateless\/2018\/06\/students-of-kr-mangalam-school.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\"><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Ban the Bulb campaign integrated our on-ground<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/india\/en\/news\/greenpeace-launches-a-signatur\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> volunteers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with our online &nbsp;&nbsp;digital activists and mobile phone campaigning (missed calls and SMS actions). Over two and a half lakh people signed up to support the campaign and three years later celebrated success with the announcement of the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bachat Lamp Yojana program<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 2009.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"text-center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1503 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-india-stateless\/2018\/06\/GMfree-300x201.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"469\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-india-stateless\/2018\/06\/GMfree-300x201.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-india-stateless\/2018\/06\/GMfree-768x515.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-india-stateless\/2018\/06\/GMfree-507x340.jpg 507w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-india-stateless\/2018\/06\/GMfree.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The detection<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/india\/en\/news\/mayapuri-is-still-a-radiation\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of nuclear radiation at <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mayapuri<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Delhi, and the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/india\/Global\/india\/report\/2010\/3\/the-civil-liability-for-nuclea.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">campaigning around the Government\u2019s proposed nuclear liability bill<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> helped enforce one of our key demands in the 2010 Monsoon Session of the Parliament &nbsp;&nbsp;\u2013 that of complete supplier liability <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">i.e. The supplier of the technology be held liable in case of any nuclear accident owing to faulty products or technology. If their products are flawed, it is unfair if the Indian taxpayer must foot enormous bills in the event of a disaster, while the company just rakes in the profits. Furthermore, the health and safety of our nation is at risk from nuclear contamination if we don\u2019t have strong laws that hold suppliers accountable for their products.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Our Safe Food campaign continued to win a world record for the biggest <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GM Free <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Baigan<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Bharta<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Onwards &#8211; the Delhi rooftop solar campaign, and the Switch on the Sun initiative culminated in the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bike-A-Thon for World Environment Day<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 2013, bringing Greenpeace supporters, Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs), cyclists and radio stations on board (or on their bicycles) to join the long running campaign to solarise our cities and our villages. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That idea of a solar generation from 2013 still lives on.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our sustainable agriculture campaign hit headlines the next year as Greenpeace India published an expose report confirming the presence of &nbsp;pesticide residue in products of major tea brands of the country \u2013 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">persuading companies like Unilever, Girnar, Tata and Wagh Bakri<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to commit to non-pesticides management for their tea cultivation\u2013 <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">making our food and chai safer.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mahan campaign started in the forests<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, working with tribal communities, and led to the creation of an online nation \u2013 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the Republic of Junglistan<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The campaign had everything from legal cases to reports, celebrity endorsements (Fools for Forests), a show on MTV. offline, online and mobile activism (inc. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Radio Sangharsh<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) in the cities and the forests, culminating in a huge <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">non-violent direct action<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in January 2014 and ultimate <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">landmark legal victory<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> we never believed possible. Over 1 million people (10 Lakh) joined the campaign \u2013 <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and if you were one of them, then that victory was your doing &#8211; thank you.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By January 2015, Greenpeace India had come a long way since since its inception, with offices in Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Patna, Kolkata, Pune, Hyderabad and Chennai. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"timeline-item\">\n<p><span class=\"year\"> 2014-2015 <\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Recent history<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In June 2014 the media reported that the Indian Intelligence agency had allegedly leaked a report making <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bizarre claims about Greenpeace India<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and other civil society organisations. This report has never been officially published. A series of rapid shocking blows followed one after the other. T<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">he MHA blocked donations<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &nbsp;from international donors, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">suspended Greenpeace India\u2019s FCRA registrations<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and stopped Greenpeace staff with valid visas <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from entering India<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To suppress dissent from all fronts, in January 2015, MHA offloaded Greenpeace India activist, Priya Pillai from her London-bound flight. She was on her way to talk to British Parliamentarians about the human and forest rights violations committed in the forests of Mahan in Central India by a London-based company. &nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In April 2015, MHA froze Greenpeace India\u2019s domestic accounts blocking the donations of 77,768 Indian citizens. Greenpeace India was threatened with imminent closure. But we remained optimistic, because we believe that optimism is a form of courage. &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This was the probably the darkest chapter in the history of Greenpeace India. As much as we would like to forget about it, what we want to remember is the unprecedented support that we got from numerous Indian citizens who stood by us.
