New Delhi | June 27, 2017| <\/b>\u00a0The absolute silence on climate change at the Modi-Trump meet doesn\u2019t come as a surprise, said Greenpeace India in a statement today.<\/p>\n
After pulling out of the Paris Climate Accord, US President Donald Trump had clearly and consciously isolated himself from the rest of the world giving up its global leadership position. PM Modi not broaching the subject of climate change clearly indicates that the world will move on without the US.<\/p>\n
Soon after Donald Trump\u2019s pullout Mr Modi, had described the Paris Agreement as \u2018a part of our duty to protect Mother Earth\u2019 and pledged to go beyond the Paris Agreement. India has so far taken several initiatives to rev up the renewable energy sector to achieve the target of 175 GW of renewable energy by 2022. The Indian government\u2019s initiative to form the International Solar Alliance (ISA) to support clean energy projects in the member countries has seen over 120 countries sign up so far.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Paris accord is unique in that it is a collective agreement of almost all nations and the Trump administration has made it very clear where they stand on it when they pulled out of it. We appreciate India showing leadership by agreeing to go above and beyond our commitments. We should focus on moving ahead on our commitment and not waste time trying to convince climate deniers. It is heartening and very encouraging to see American citizens; States, Cities, corporations and civil society take up the leadership vacated by the Trump administration and reassert their commitment to mitigating climate change. With or without the US Federal Government the world will go ahead and do its best to keep global warming below 1.5oC,\u201d said Ravi Chellam, Executive Director, Greenpeace India.<\/p>\n
