Yet, until quite recently, an ice ceiling prevented women from joining expeditions to the Antarctic. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A woman applying to join the British Antarctic Survey was rejected on the basis that \u201cwomen wouldn\u2019t like it in the Antarctic as there are no shops and no hairdressers.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sigh. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Other female applicants were told they wouldn\u2019t be able to handle the extreme temperatures, that there weren\u2019t any facilities for them, or they weren\u2019t up to the scientific tasks.
