The house is a symbol of the home they are fighting to protect, creating hope and community in the face of destruction<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Kanahus Manuel is an Indigenous leader from the Secwepemc First Nation territory in British Columbia, Canada. She has lived her entire life in the region and is spearheading her community\u2019s fight to protect it from Kinder Morgan\u2019s controversial Trans Mountain pipeline project.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cAs Indigenous women, freedom fighters and land defenders, we have no other choice, even though we\u2019re in a very vulnerable situation. We become a target and feel unsafe because we have to face pipeline construction work camps full of men. This is the reality for Indigenous women when they stand up to fight and has been my reality my whole life. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI was born into this movement. When I was 4 years old, the first memory I have of fighting for Indigenous rights is when my parents took me and my twin sister on a train to Ottawa to fight for our rights. This is an intergenerational struggle &#8211; it won\u2019t stop with me. In fact, she\u2019s in the Antarctic right now with 78 other female scientists researching the impacts of rising temperatures and melting ice on the region\u2019s wildlife. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIn general, I have learned that, as women, we have to make our voices sound strong, not to antagonise men, but because of the skills and abilities we have to bring innovative and creative ideas to the old ways of doing things. Using her expertise and voice she brings Indigenous expertise and scientific knowledge together to develop solutions that provide energy, food and medicine for the communities in Chad.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cTraditional knowledge and climate science are both critically important for building resilience of rural communities to cope with climate change, and Indigenous peoples are ready to share their knowledge to help to mitigate and adapt,\u201d she explained to the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/blog\/2016\/04\/indigenous-mbororo-woman-to-speak-at-paris-agreement-signing-ceremony-on-22-april\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">UN<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Her organisation, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.afpat.net\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Association for Indigenous Women and Peoples of Chad<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (AFPAT)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, is using 3D mapping tools to show the benefits of using Indigenous peoples\u2019 knowledge to solve climate problems. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">To learn more about Hindou&#8217;s work and initiative, visit her <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.afpat.net\/about\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">website<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Not only does this mean the endangerment and loss of many precious species like orangutans, but it also subjects Indonesia and its neighbouring countries to a suffocating forest fire haze each year. For Ninda Felina, Indonesia\u2019s deforestation also means losing something else &#8211; its sounds. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As a DJ, Ninda is obviously in tune to the environment around her, so she collaborated with the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sosforests.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Save Our Sounds project<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> &#8211; to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en_au\/article\/3k75p5\/this-dj-is-heading-deep-into-indonesias-jungles-to-record-the-sounds-of-a-vanishing-ecosystem\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">record the unique sounds of the forest<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, turning them into music, and bringing that back into the city where she not only entertains, but also educates her audience. Using this creative method means taking people along on her journey through the deep jungle.
