But why should you care about them? Because they&#8217;re a lot more than just whale food. Penguins, seabirds, seals, fish, and whales all eat krill. And anything in the Antarctic that doesn\u2019t eat krill, probably eats something else that does. Where\u2019s our invite? <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though tiny by human standards (the biggest species only grows to about 6cm long), krill swarm together in massive numbers, with as many as 30,000 in one cubic metre of a krill swarm. When times are tough they can also <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.antarctica.gov.au\/about-antarctica\/wildlife\/animals\/krill\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shrink in size<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, conserving energy by staying smaller when they moult shells rather than growing ever bigger. If only we could do the same&#8230;<\/span>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Antarctic krill are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/newatlas.com\/krill-atmospheric-carbon-transportation-deep-ocean\/52643\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">climate heroes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Scientists have recently discovered that krill play a vital role in capturing carbon and depositing it on the seafloor \u2013 locking it up and keeping it out of the atmosphere. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have you fallen in love with krill yet? We think they\u2019re pretty awesome. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They\u2019re essential for all other life in the Antarctic Ocean, and much further afield too.
