That the wood and paper you buy comes from sustainable and responsible forest management? That the clothes you wear are produced without toxic chemicals and made by workers in decent conditions?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This doesn\u2019t seem like an unreasonable way of organising ourselves. Donald Trump is throwing his toys out of the cot, threatening and applying tariffs to steel according to his whim. EU leaders reacted to the threats of tariffs by calling it blatant protectionism, even going so far as to say that <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/us-stops-short-of-cliff-edge-as-trump-steps-back-on-tariff-plans\/a-43067657\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this wouldn\u2019t happen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> if only we had agreed the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then, when the EU get the exemption they wanted, the Commission <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/europa.eu\/rapid\/press-release_MEX-18-2581_en.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">started proceedings<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for its own safeguard measures to protect its steel market. Free trade indeed\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those who claim to bow before the free trade gods are all too happy to implement protectionist measures for their own political gains.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rich countries have made our current trade rules &#8211; via both the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wto.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">World Trade Organisation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/archive-international\/en\/campaigns\/trade-and-the-environment\/what-is-free-trade\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">free trade agreements<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; and made sure that these rules suit their needs, providing few means for people in poor countries to protect themselves from aggressive export policies. The rules governing global trade policy mean that powerful countries and corporations escape accountability while exploiting workers, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iatp.org\/trade\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">small-scale farmers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.beuc.eu\/general\/trade-policy-general-other-trade-negotiations\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">consumers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These so-called free trade policies promote rather than stop <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/publication\/15395\/moment-of-truth\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">high-risk commodities like palm oil<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and do nothing to address the regular <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/deredactie.be\/cm\/vrtnieuws.english\/News\/1.3163717\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">food scandals<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/story\/6837\/why-brazils-rotten-meat-scandal-is-a-big-problem-and-not-just-for-brazilians\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">meat<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/secured.greenpeace.org\/eu-unit\/en\/blog\/what-are-pesticides-doing-in-our-eggs\/blog\/60016\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dairy industries<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Governments are playing protectionism against free trade in words but not deeds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the biggest <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">examples of hypocrisy is the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/agriculture\/cap-overview_en\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">EU\u2019s common agricultural policy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; or CAP &#8211; established over 50 years ago and currently under reform. This policy, thanks also to the support of highly protective tariffs and agro-chemical companies, has allowed destructive intensive practices to become the default way European food is produced.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It has short-term benefits, perhaps, for you and me as consumers; food prices are often lower than production costs. But it favours industrial agricultural over small ecological farmers, and there are, frankly, no long-term benefits to be seen. Aside from the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/bilaterals.org\/?eu-mercosur-fta-27-draft-chapters\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mercosur deal with Latin America<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> where the meat industry has a dire impact on the Amazon, rural areas,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and often threatens Indigenous rights &#8211; <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">they want to open up foreign agricultural markets to European goods. This would be to the detriment of local farmers and workers who, instead of growing a variety of local crops for local consumption, would be forced to change to cash crops and monocultures. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So what can we do? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our individual choices can challenge the status quo, and force things to change. You can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldwildlife.org\/pages\/which-everyday-products-contain-palm-oil\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">check what you buy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and refuse to purchase products that come from deforestation &#8211; like <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">soy, palm oil, cocoa and other agricultural and meat products. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/citizens-initiative\/public\/initiatives\/open\/details\/2017\/000008\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">actively challenge<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> governments\u2019 decisions to make new trade deals that benefit large multinationals at the expense of our health and environment. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can write letters to newspapers, vote for politicians who take this matter seriously, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/secure.avaaz.org\/page\/en\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">launch<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> petitions to bring people\u2019s attention to how the current trade system is unfair; how it\u2019s all about big players and multinationals exploiting others. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We can challenge the myth <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that we have to choose between protectionism versus free trade, and end the myth that free trade <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/stop-ttip.org\/blog\/ceta-ads-not-all-that-glitters-is-gold\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">brings any meaningful benefit<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the average consumer<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For more information about the trade we want, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/trade-leaks.org\/principles-for-sustainable-trade\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">click here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>Shira Stanton is a senior political strategist at Greenpeace International<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"EmptyMessage\">Block content is empty.
