You can now <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/cleanerships\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">help change this<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After years of inaction, the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">International Maritime Organization (IMO), the UN body responsible for global shipping regulations, will meet in London on April 9 &#8211; 13 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to finally agree on a plan to tackle the carbon emissions from ships<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While there are many things we can do to lower our own emissions &#8211; from cycling to saying no to single-use plastic or eating less meat &#8211; some things are further out of our hands, such as shipping. But together we can give the IMO a massive wake-up call for the sake of the planet.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_15790\" style=\"width: 1210px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15790\" class=\"wp-image-15790 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-international-stateless\/2018\/04\/799740f0-gp0str8vr_medium_res.jpg\" alt=\"Freighter Stranded at the Wadden Sea in Germany \u00a9 Joerg Modrow \/ Greenpeace\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-international-stateless\/2018\/04\/799740f0-gp0str8vr_medium_res.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-international-stateless\/2018\/04\/799740f0-gp0str8vr_medium_res-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-international-stateless\/2018\/04\/799740f0-gp0str8vr_medium_res-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-international-stateless\/2018\/04\/799740f0-gp0str8vr_medium_res-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-international-stateless\/2018\/04\/799740f0-gp0str8vr_medium_res-510x340.jpg 510w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-15790\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Freighter stranded at the Wadden Sea in Germany<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cutting emissions from shipping would play a key role in meeting the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/indepth\/opinion\/win-fight-climate-change-180128114314835.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paris Climate Agreement&#8217;s<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> goals and here are five reasons why we need to put the spotlight on the IMO.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><b> Shipping is a major contributor to climate change<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ships carry <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/unctad.org\/en\/pages\/PublicationWebflyer.aspx?publicationid=1890\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">over 80%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of world trade, using vessels that operate on marine fuels which are cheaper but dirtier than road transport diesel fuels. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the shipping sector were a country, it would rank<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sixth <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the list of carbon emitters, just above Germany. The sector\u2019s emissions have been growing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/e360.yale.edu\/features\/reduce_co2_emissions_shipping_aviation_regulation_paris\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">three times faster<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than global emissions and if left unchecked emissions <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imo.org\/en\/OurWork\/Environment\/PollutionPrevention\/AirPollution\/Documents\/Third%20Greenhouse%20Gas%20Study\/GHG3%20Executive%20Summary%20and%20Report.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">could grow<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by 50-250% by 2050. <\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><b> Aggressive lobbying and lack of public scrutiny has led to lack of action<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The IMO is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/influencemap.org\/report\/Corporate-capture-of-the-IMO-902bf81c05a0591c551f965020623fda\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heavily influenced by the shipping industry<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which has prevented the adoption of ambitious climate rules for the sector. The lack of public scrutiny on the IMO &#8211; unlike other UN organisations &#8211; has helped the industry avoid emissions regulations. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The IMO&#8217;s transparency has been reviewed by <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anti-corruption organisation Transparency International, which found that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transparency.org\/news\/pressrelease\/weak_governance_at_un_shipping_agency_delaying_action_on_climate_change\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">weak IMO governance is delaying action on climate change<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li><b> The IMO\u2019s April meeting can be the first step towards greener seas<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At its meeting in London, we must ensure the IMO agrees on a high ambition plan to reduce shipping\u2019s climate impact before a final deal is agreed in 2023. Greenpeace is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/cleanerships\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">working with a coalition of NGOs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to increase the sector&#8217;s climate ambition. We need industry-wide adoption \u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If ships are required to operate at lower speeds this could reduce emissions <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cleanshipping.org\/download\/Slow-steaming-CE-Delft-final.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">by a third<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and save fuel. Using carbon-free fuels and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/e360.yale.edu\/features\/europe-takes-first-steps-in-electrifying-worlds-shipping-fleets\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">propulsion technologies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, like wind-assisted propulsion, or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/features\/2018-03-13\/the-next-ship-you-board-might-run-on-batteries\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">battery-powered engines<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can also cut emissions and significantly reduce costs. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Greenpeace is already doing its small bit. Our flagship the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/explore\/ships\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rainbow Warrior<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is propelled by a two-mast structure with 1,255 m2 of sailing rig, large enough for a work vessel that also has a helideck.
