In early March, Indigenous leaders from across Canada and the United States came together to build a traditional <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalobserver.com\/2018\/03\/25\/opinion\/warriors-and-watch-house\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWatch House\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 or a place to keep guard \u2014 near the pipeline route. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If completed, the pipeline would carry bitumen \u2014 one of the most dangerous and polluting types of oil \u2014 from the Alberta tar sands in central Canada out to the Pacific Ocean. From there, it would be shipped down the coast to California and overseas markets. Kinder Morgan does not have consent from the Indigenous Peoples whose territory the pipeline would cross.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On 10 March, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/news\/canada\/2018\/03\/10\/thousands-march-in-bc-to-protest-trans-mountain-pipeline-expansion.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more than 10,000 people<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> marched in British Columbia to support the Indigenous-led protest against the pipeline. Across the eight days of protest, more <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en_ca\/article\/xw7xjz\/why-nearly-100-pipeline-protesters-have-been-arrested-this-week\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">than 170 people were arrested<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>To better understand the protesters\u2019 concerns, I looked at their stories.<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.teenvogue.com\/story\/10000-people-protested-this-proposed-kinder-morgan-pipeline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ocean Hyland<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a young woman from the Tsleil-Waututh community in British Columbia who marched alongside family and friends.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_15779\" style=\"width: 1210px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15779\" class=\"size-full wp-image-15779\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-international-stateless\/2018\/04\/6705f71c-40157150384_8c67e3a8f4_k-e1522952203780.jpg\" alt=\"Ocean Hyland at the Kinder Morgan Pipeline Protests \u00a9 Rogue Collective \/ Greenpeace\" width=\"1200\" height=\"799\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-15779\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ocean Hyland is from the Tsleil-Waututh Nation, whose territory is threatened by Kinder Morgan&#8217;s proposed oil sands pipeline. \u00a9 Rogue Collective \/ Greenpeace<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;It\u2019s not if, but when Kinder Morgan\u2019s pipeline or tankers spill,&#8221; Hyland said. &#8220;Just look at the Dakota Access Pipeline, which, in only six months of operation, has already <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2018\/01\/09\/dakota-access-pipeline-leak-energy-transfer-partners\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">spilled five times<\/span><\/a>.<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0It is up to us all to protect the sea and the land, and to speak on behalf of the creatures who share this Earth. Water is life. It connects, sustains, and keeps us alive every day.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There was also Terry Christenson a 70-year-old grandfather who sat in a tree directly in the path of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/risingtidenorthamerica.org\/2018\/03\/grandfather-scales-tree-erects-mid-air-camp-to-stop-kinder-morgan-clear-cutting\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kinder Morgan\u2019s clear-cutting activity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis is insane, you can\u2019t even quantify how much fresh water this pipeline crosses,\u201d Christenson said.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Meet Terry. Cavanaugh used to work for the company that owned the pipeline Kinder Morgan is currently trying to expand.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI lived in fear when I worked for Trans Mountain\u00a0because the reality is that no amount of equipment or people is going to change the fact that in the event of a spill, they will be able to recover very little,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2018\/mar\/24\/canada-arrests-trans-mountain-pipeline-oil\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">she said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_15780\" style=\"width: 1210px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15780\" class=\"size-full wp-image-15780\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-international-stateless\/2018\/04\/87025e0a-27054860788_7a7e81177d_k-e1522952748721.jpg\" alt=\"Former Kinder Morgan Employee Romilly Cavanaugh Joins Pipeline Protest \u00a9 Rogue Collective\" width=\"1200\" height=\"783\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-15780\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Former Trans Mountain employee Romilly Cavanaugh joined protesters in opposing the company&#8217;s proposed oil sands pipeline expansion. \u00a9 Rogue Collective<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pipeline companies like Kinder Morgan and Energy Transfer Partners (ETP) \u2014 the company behind the Dakota Access pipeline \u2014 have a history of \u201c<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/british-columbia\/first-nations-legal-action-federal-government-kinder-morgan-1.3939441\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">riding roughshod<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d over the rights of Indigenous Peoples and of trying to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/opinion\/bc-pipeline-protest-case-shows-how-lawsuits-threaten-democratic-voices\/article21789300\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">silence protesters<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As Jackie Fielder recalled in a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.teenvogue.com\/story\/how-banks-fund-oil-pipelines\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Teen Vogue<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> interview,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0thousands of Indigenous Peoples and their supporters faced \u201csurveillance, rubber bullets, attack dogs, concussion grenades, and water cannons in subfreezing temperatures\u201d at the Standing Rock protests against the Dakota Access Pipeline.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Violence against people expressing freedom of speech and protecting their homes is appalling. But what followed Standing Rock is also outrageous. In solidarity with Coast Salish communities, they aim to show the world that Canada is going down the wrong path on climate and on reconciliation with Indigenous Nations in building this pipeline.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Kinder Morgan pipeline would increase supertanker traffic in coastal waters <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/vancouversun.com\/news\/local-news\/b-c-pipeline-showdown-will-kinder-morgan-expansion-get-built\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">seven-fold<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. S<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cientists have warned that increased supertanker traffic could interrupt the feeding patterns of the endangered orcas, pushing the species <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2016\/nov\/16\/canada-oil-pipeline-expansion-killer-whales-kinder-morgan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to the brink of extinction<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On top of that, the U.S. crude oil pipeline system as a whole has averaged <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/usa\/research\/four-proposed-tar-sands-oil-pipelines-pose-a-threat-to-water-resources\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one significant incident per year<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> per 1,000 miles of pipe for the past decade. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An oil spill would risk damage to the land and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">contaminate precious drinking water <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for communities along the pipeline route. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2>All of that added up to make <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en_ca\/article\/xw7xjz\/why-nearly-100-pipeline-protesters-have-been-arrested-this-week\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">more than 170 people<\/a> willing to risk arrest to stop this disastrous pipeline.<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Forty-six years ago Greenpeace got its start right here in Vancouver protecting this coastline and the world from the sorts of ecological disasters and social disruption that Kinder Morgan\u2019s pipeline threatens,&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.alternet.org\/environment\/greenpeace-co-founder-rex-weyler-arrested-protesting-trans-mountain-pipeline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said Weyler<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cLike then, we stand now for protection of the natural bounty that keeps our communities alive and prosperous.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We stand here on the land and by the waters of the Tsleil Waututh people, who have shown us generosity and taught us responsibility, in solidarity and prepared to go to jail, to preserve the ecological integrity of this coast for ourselves and future generations.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>Leola Abraham is a global communications lead with Greenpeace USA.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"EmptyMessage\">Block content is empty.
