You probably don\u2019t know who Magnus Groth or Essity are. But when whenever you use the bathroom, you might just end up using one of the many brands of toilet paper made by <\/span>Europe\u2019s largest tissue producing giant<\/span><\/a>, Essity. They\u2019re the company behind Tempo, Velvet, Plenty, Edet, Lotus, Zewa and Tork.<\/span><\/p>\n

Yesterday, Greenpeace Nordic payed a visit to Essity\u2019s annual meeting of its shareholders in downtown Stockholm. \u00a0Our campaigners presented Mr. Groth with the Greenpeace \u2018Golden Chainsaw Award\u2019, an accolade granted to those in influential positions that <\/span>fail to act to protect the world\u2019s forests<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Previous winners of this award have included the \u2018<\/span>Soya King<\/span><\/a>‘ of the Amazon, <\/span>Asia Pulp and Paper (APP)<\/span><\/a> and the government of <\/span>Papua New Guinea<\/span><\/a>, to name but a few. Some have gone on to <\/span>change their ways<\/span><\/a> after receiving the award.<\/span><\/p>\n

Why did Essity\u2019s CEO receive the Award this year?<\/span><\/p>\n

In October 2017, Greenpeace and Sofia Jannok, a twice-Grammy-nominated S\u00e1mi artist from Sweden, tried to <\/span>deliver the signatures<\/span><\/a> of almost a quarter of a million people directly to Mr. Groth at Essity\u2019s headquarters in Stockholm. He was too preoccupied with announcing the company\u2019s Q3 financial results and sent public relations staff to accept the petition.<\/span><\/p>\n

It wasn\u2019t until late November that we received a written response to the petition from Mr. Groth. \u00a0He said that Essity was committed to being a \u2018forerunner of sustainability\u2019 and \u2018to make a difference for the protection and restoration of valuable forest landscapes on all our markets.\u2019 <\/span><\/p>\n

So, what has Essity really been doing to protect the Great Northern Forest?<\/span><\/p>\n

Well, they\u2019ve been holding a lot of meetings, including with Greenpeace. In January, it finally got around to writing to its pulp suppliers, asking for more information about where the fibre comes from and what the environmental and social impacts might be.<\/span><\/p>\n

In late February, Essity were due to update Greenpeace on the response. But they\u2019ve just asked for more time. We\u2019re now scheduled to meet them in early May.<\/span><\/p>\n

There is still no sign of SCA, one of Essity\u2019s main Swedish pulp suppliers, agreeing to stop the destruction of some of the world\u2019s most precious old-growth forests, crucial to the livelihoods of the S\u00e1mi people.<\/span><\/p>\n

The national association of the Swedish S\u00e1mi (SSR) \u2013 whose members include most S\u00e1mi reindeer herders \u2013 have repeatedly demanded that SCA stops cutting down any forests to develop plantations of lodgepole pine – an invasive tree species native to North America. Once established, these plantation areas become unsuitable for traditional reindeer herding.<\/span><\/p>\n

To date, S\u00e1mi reindeer herders\u2019 demands have been ignored by both SCA and Essity. But Greenpeace is working closely with SSR to help them get a ban on the use of lodgepole pine.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Clearly, actions speak louder than words. It\u2019s time for Essity to stop with all the talking and actually <\/span>do something to protect this forest wilderness<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n
