Today, there are more than 12,000 Munduruku living in the region. The project would flood an area the size of New York City and would directly impact the lives of the Munduruku. Greenpeace joined forces with the Munduruku, and millions of people like you around the globe <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/archive-international\/en\/news\/Blogs\/makingwaves\/megadam-in-the-heart-of-amazon-license-cancelled-by-ibama\/blog\/57189\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stood in solidarity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with them to stop the S\u00e3o Luiz do Tapaj\u00f3s dam last year. <\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The project was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/2016\/08\/environmental-licence-for-sao-luiz-do-tapajos-hydroelectric-dam-denied\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">denied<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but the Munduruku territory is still vulnerable. There are still other 40 dams planned for the Tapaj\u00f3s River basin, and only the official recognition of their territory by the Brazilian government can protect it.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<lite-youtube style=\"background-image: url('https:\/\/i.ytimg.com\/vi\/zxZx9M7g8xg\/hqdefault.jpg');\" videoid=\"zxZx9M7g8xg\" params=\"rel=0\"><\/lite-youtube>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To fight for the recognition of their territory, the Munduruku have produced the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-international-stateless\/2024\/03\/56b656cb-mapa_munduruku_ilustracao-eng_versao_web.pdf\">Map of Life<\/a>, the result of a rich and intense process that took more than two years to complete.
