{"id":16194,"date":"2018-04-27T06:00:19","date_gmt":"2018-04-27T06:00:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/?p=16194"},"modified":"2025-07-02T09:42:37","modified_gmt":"2025-07-02T07:42:37","slug":"new-deforestation-revealed-as-indonesian-minister-arrives-in-eu-to-defend-palm-oil-industry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/press-release\/16194\/new-deforestation-revealed-as-indonesian-minister-arrives-in-eu-to-defend-palm-oil-industry\/","title":{"rendered":"New deforestation revealed as Indonesian minister arrives in EU to defend palm oil industry"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">London, UK &#8211; A palm oil supplier to Mars, Nestl\u00e9, PepsiCo and Unilever is destroying rainforests in Papua, Indonesia, a new investigation by Greenpeace International has revealed.[1] Satellite analysis suggests that around 4,000ha of rainforest were cleared in PT Megakarya Jaya Raya concession between May 2015 and April 2017 \u2013 an area almost half the size of Paris.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The findings come as a delegation from the Indonesian government arrives in Europe to defend the palm oil industry, in response to moves by European Parliament to discourage the use of palm oil in biofuels on environmental grounds. Luhut Panjaitan, the Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs of Indonesia is visiting several European cities, including Brussels and Berlin.[2]<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAfter destroying much of the rainforests of Sumatra and Kalimantan, the palm oil industry is now pushing into new frontiers like Papua. If the Indonesian government wants to defend this &nbsp;industry, the best thing it can do is to force it to clean up its act, not threaten to start a trade war,\u201d said <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Richard George, forests campaigner at Greenpeace UK.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Photos and video taken in March and April 2018 show massive deforestation in PT MJR, a palm oil concession controlled by the Hayel Saeed Anam Group (HSA),[3] including in an area zoned for protection by the Indonesian government in response to the devastating forest fires in 2015. Development is prohibited in these areas.[4] <\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"p1\">Although PT MJR is not yet producing palm oil, two other HSA subsidiary companies \u2013 Arma Group and Pacific Oils &amp; Fats \u2013 supplied palm oil to Mars, Nestl\u00e9, PepsiCo and Unilever, according to supply chain information released by the brands earlier this year.[5] Each of these consumer companies &nbsp;has published a \u2018no deforestation, no peat, no exploitation\u2019 policy that should prohibit sourcing from rainforest destroyers.<\/p>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBrands have been talking about cleaning up their palm oil for over a decade. Companies like Unilever and Nestl\u00e9 claim to be industry leaders. So why are they still buying from forest&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">destroyers like the HSA group? What are their customers supposed to think? What will it take to get them to act?\u201d, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Richard George.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This case also raises serious questions for the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO). Many HSA Group palm oil companies are members of the RSPO, although PT MJR and the other HSA Group concessions in this district are not. In 2015, he stated that the<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2018country should expel NGOs that disrupt the palm oil industry, which is of National Importance<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019. &nbsp;He <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.tempo.co\/read\/news\/2015\/11\/26\/056722592\/GAPKI-Wants-Palm-Oil-to-beListed-as-a-Strategic-Commodity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">went on to say<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that \u2018<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Non-governmental organisations (NGOs) talk about how the industry is killing off our monkeys \u2013 I say, the government will not hesitate to ban NGOs from embarking on these smear campaigns against the industry, which is harmful to the stability of the nation.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">[3] The Hayel Saeed Anam Group (HSA) is a large Yemeni privately-owned conglomerate, owned and managed by the family of founder Hayel Saeed Anam. <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hsagroup.com\/our-companies\/indonesia.aspx?p=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On its website<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, HSA states that it has \u2018recently purchased 160,000 acres [sic] of Indonesian land to be used for sustainable palm oil cultivation\u2019. HSA does not disclose the concession name(s) or location. However, company deeds show that various members of the Saeed Anam family have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/chainreactionresearch.com\/reports\/indonesian-palm-oils-stranded-assets\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">management control of four concessions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Indonesia\u2019s Papua province \u2013 including PT MJR \u2013 with a total landbank of 154,527ha.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">[4] In 2016 Indonesia\u2019s Ministry of Forestry and Environment introduced new peatland regulations (Regulation PP 57\/2016) &nbsp;which led to rezoning peatland areas for protection or production. The maps of these areas were released in February 2017 ( SK130\/2017) and show parts of PT HSA as zoned for protection. <\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">[5] Arma Group \/ Arma Foods is a <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hsagroup.com\/hsa-en\/our-companies\/egypt\/arma-international.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">direct subsidiary of HSA Group<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Arma is a direct palm oil supplier to <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mars.com\/docs\/default-source\/Policies-and-Practices\/marspalmupdate_march_2018.pdf?sfvrsn=4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mars<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pepsico.com\/docs\/album\/policies-doc\/pepsico-2018-direct-palm-oil-supplier-list_vf.pdf?sfvrsn=b1bad141_4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PepsiCo<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unilever.com\/Images\/unilever-palm-oil-supplier-list_tcm244-515896_en.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unilever<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, according to supply chain data released by the companies in February and March 2018.
