After a winter with very little snow, strong winds are spreading the fires even faster. Local authorities have declared a state of emergency. Garbage and vegetation burned around houses grows into forest fires. Even \u2018controlled burnings\u2019 by the national forest service eventually get out of hand. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The only wild areas in Amur province that are not currently engulfed in flames are those protected by permafrost.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>How do wildfires hurt the climate?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Burning grass, trees or any plant matter releases planet-warming carbon dioxide. In simple terms, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fs.fed.us\/nrs\/pubs\/jrnl\/2014\/nrs_2014_liu_001.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">each wildfire heats up the planet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. At the scale we\u2019re seeing in Amur, that\u2019s a large amount of CO<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and a major setback in efforts to meet <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/indepth\/opinion\/win-fight-climate-change-180128114314835.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paris Climate Agreement goals<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wildfires also create and spread soot. Black carbon is transported with the wind onto snow and Arctic ice which reduces their reflective properties. This increases the amount of solar radiation absorbed by the surface, which, in turn, accelerates the melting of snow and ice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What can be done?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Globally, Greenpeace is pushing for wildfire emissions to be recognised in national carbon quotas and climate conservation plans \u2014 and for countries in rainforest and Boreal regions, including Russia, to take immediate action to limit fires within their borders. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the Amur region, like in many places where wildfires spread, fires are often <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/28.mchs.gov.ru\/pressroom\/news\/item\/6805087\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">started by people<\/span><\/a>,<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> so education about causes, impacts and alternatives is crucial.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>How you can help prevent wildfires<\/b><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong> If you see a wildfire, immediately report it<\/strong> to your local authority. Never assume it has already been reported. If possible, give an accurate address or coordinates.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Up to 90% of wildfires are caused by people<\/strong>. They can be prevented by people too. Simple steps can prevent any looming disasters \u2014 never dispose burning cigarettes before completely extinguishing them and the same applies to bonfires; pour plenty water and stir the ashes well, so that the fire doesnn&#8217;t rekindle. Never leave a fire unattended!<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong>Donate to volunteer firefighters<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
