They\u2019re there because they want to point out that Mitsubishi, as well as being one of the largest investors in renewables, is one of the largest funders of new coal projects. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s be honest, banks and and investment firms haven\u2019t always been natural homes for environmentalists. But, increasingly, we\u2019re seeing demands across the spectrum <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/press-release\/16141\/indigenous-people-and-swiss-pensioners-challenge-switzerlands-biggest-banks-on-oil-pipeline-funding\/\">for accountability and transparency<\/a> over where money is invested. Ordinary people want<a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/story\/16274\/finance-climate-change-insurances-tax-sweden\/\"> better visibility<\/a> and more of a say in an industry that, for a long time, has felt impenetrable. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We know pensions aren\u2019t as interesting as penguins, and we also know that the stunning forests we work tirelessly to protect as an organisation are easier to visualise than matters of finance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But here are the top five reasons why, if you really do care about the environment, it\u2019s worth buckling up and looking into cash flow. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>1) I ain\u2019t saying you\u2019re a golddigger <\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Globally, 5 trillion USD<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is still invested in fossil fuel companies. Yes, <\/span><b>5 trillion.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> And as long as the cash keeps flowing, you know they\u2019ll keep digging it up.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>2) Money to burn<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Everyone, from the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4150725\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">British Medical Association<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/350.org\/press-release\/world-council-of-churches-endorses-fossil-fuel-divestment\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">World council of Churches<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.stanford.edu\/news\/2014\/may\/divest-coal-trustees-050714.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stanford University<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, agrees that a dollar invested in fossil fuels is a dollar lost. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But coal, oil and gas have dominated our global economy for so long, and have such a stranglehold, that changing course is like turning around a giant tanker.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_16569\" style=\"width: 1210px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16569\" class=\"wp-image-16569 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-international-stateless\/2018\/05\/dd1e59e4-gp0stpea3_medium_res.jpg\" alt=\"Hands off Australians\u2019 Tax Money Action in Sydney \u00a9 Dean Sewell \/ Greenpeace\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-international-stateless\/2018\/05\/dd1e59e4-gp0stpea3_medium_res.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-international-stateless\/2018\/05\/dd1e59e4-gp0stpea3_medium_res-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-international-stateless\/2018\/05\/dd1e59e4-gp0stpea3_medium_res-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-international-stateless\/2018\/05\/dd1e59e4-gp0stpea3_medium_res-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-international-stateless\/2018\/05\/dd1e59e4-gp0stpea3_medium_res-510x340.jpg 510w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-16569\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Greenpeace Australia activists set up a \u2018Cash for Coal\u2019 gameshow booth at the annual awards ceremony for the mining industry (2015)<\/p><\/div>\n<h3><b>3) Money changes everything<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Things are starting to shift. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/gofossilfree.org\/divestment\/commitments\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">884 institutions worth over $6 trillion USD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have committed to taking their money out of coal. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This means we can actually start to transform the economy into one built on clean, sustainable energy &#8211; instead of fossil fuels. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>4) Spend your money wisely <\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some of you might have investments here and there. You might have insurance for your car or house, have money saved in a bank or your employer has put some of your income away into pension funds for you to access when you retire. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Ask how it\u2019s invested.<\/strong>\u00a0You have the power to help shift our economy in the right direction.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>5) The money will roll right in<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A transition to a low carbon economy offers an estimated <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/static.newclimateeconomy.report\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/NCE_Chapter6_Finance.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$89 trillion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> investment opportunity. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Market forces continue to show that new energy economy is not only a growth sector, but continues to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.asyousow.org\/reports\/clean-200-investing-in-a-clean-energy-future-2018-q1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">outperform fossil-fuel based energy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. You do the maths.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>The financial system is very opaque right now, so all this might take some digging.<\/strong> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But, as your mum also said, sunshine is the best disinfectant. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Share this blog with your family and friends so that they can start thinking about where their money is too. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are the savvy finance type, think about investing in a sustainable index. And if you do have shares in fossil fuel companies, use your voice as a shareholder and be an activist in the boardroom! Greenpeace is working with shareholder activists all over the world to turn their voices into megaphones. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last but not least, if you have read this far, you have already done well.
