These are the institutions that are supposed to protect us from catastrophic risk. And yet many of the same companies continue to insure and fund fossil fuel projects.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To this date, insurance companies have invested more than\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/unfriendcoal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Coal-insurance-briefing-paper-0417.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$600 billion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in fossil fuel companies. They depend on insurers to cover the legal, financial and natural risks of their projects. By <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/unfriendcoal.com\/2017\/04\/26\/all-you-ever-wanted-to-know-about-coal-insurance\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">insuring<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> new coal plants, mines, power utilities, and infrastructure projects, insurers enable these companies to continue destroying our planet. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Insurers are among the world\u2019s largest asset owners. They are uniquely placed to support the transition away from coal and fossil fuels and to keep global temperatures from rising more than 2\u00baC degrees. If they shifted their trillions away from fossil fuels to sustainable energy, the impact would be huge. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2015, before the Paris Climate Agreement was signed, Christiana Figueres, the former Executive Director of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2015\/may\/04\/un-climate-chief-says-the-science-is-clear-there-is-no-space-for-new-coal\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">warned<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that, \u201cThere is no space for new coal.\u201d But almost three years later, many companies are still building new coal power plants.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Right now, 1500 new coal power plants are being <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/coalexit.org\/sites\/default\/files\/download_public\/New%20Coal%20Plants%20Endanger%20the%20Planet.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">planned<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> across the world. According to\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/coalexit.org\/sites\/default\/files\/download_public\/New%20Coal%20Plants%20Endanger%20the%20Planet.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/urgewald.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Urgewald<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/coalswarm.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coal Swarm<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, these would expand the world\u2019s coal-fired power capacity by a staggering 42.7%. Since 2017, global insurance groups like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.axa.com\/en\/newsroom\/news\/axa-launches-new-climate-change-actions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AXA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zurich.com\/en\/knowledge\/articles\/2017\/11\/insurers-can-facilitate-the-transition-to-a-low-carbon-future\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zurich<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scor.com\/en\/media\/news-press-releases\/scor-announces-further-environmental-sustainability-initiatives\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SCOR<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and now <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.allianz.com\/en\/press\/news\/business\/insurance\/180504_allianz-announces-climate-protection-package\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Allianz<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have decided to stop insuring some or <\/span>all<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> new coal projects, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-climatechange-insurance\/european-insurers-lead-u-s-rivals-in-coal-exit-campaign-group-idUSKBN1DF00V\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Swiss Re<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has announced that it will follow suit soon. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AXA, the French insurance company, has\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2017\/dec\/12\/insurance-giant-axa-dumps-investments-tar-sands-pipelines\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">promised to divest<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> another \u20ac3.1 billion from coal, tar sands and pipeline companies and will stop insuring these companies for any new fossil fuel projects. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Generali, the biggest Italian insurance company, has taken a first step towards a cleaner investment policy, but it is far from being enough. Greenpeace Italy is still <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/italy\/it\/Cosa-puoi-fare-tu\/partecipa\/generali-cambiamenti-climatici\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">demanding that Generali stops insuring coal and fully divest<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from this harmful industry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And this is just the beginning.
