A brand audit of the waste collected revealed major multinational brands Unilever, Nestl\u00e9, Procter &amp; Gamble, and Colgate-Palmolive to be among the top polluters.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Single-use plastics are filling up our oceans and choking marine life. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2016\/12\/11\/world\/vanishing-walsh-plastic-albatross\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Birds, fish, and whales have been found dead<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, their insides filled with straws, plastic bags, and wrappers. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2017\/sep\/06\/plastic-fibres-found-tap-water-around-world-study-reveals\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Plastic has been found in drinking water all around the world<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, and it\u2019s finding its way into our food.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Corporations are not doing enough to stop this growing crisis.<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Over the past year, many big brands \u2014 including <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/usa\/news\/greenpeace-slams-coca-cola-plastic-announcement-as-dodging-the-main-issue\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Coca-Cola<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/usa\/news\/mcdonalds-sustainability-announcement-misses-the-mark-on-single-use-plastics\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">McDonald\u2019s<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breakfreefromplastic.org\/2018\/03\/13\/global-campaign-challenges-starbucks-keep-promise-curb-plastic-pollution-create-100-recyclable-cup\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Starbucks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/us.pg.com\/-\/media\/PGCOMUS\/Documents\/PDF\/PGAmbition2030InteractivePDFfinal-new.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Procter &amp; Gamble<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/usa\/news\/nestle-aiming-at-100-recyclable-or-reusable-packaging-by-2025\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Nestle<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pepsico.com\/docs\/album\/policies-doc\/packaging-a-z-topics.pdf?sfvrsn=0\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">PepsiCo<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unilever.com\/news\/Press-releases\/2017\/Unilever-commits-to-100-percent-recyclable-plastic.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Unilever<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u2014 have released statements or plans to address the massive plastic pollution crisis they helped create. But their plans are not nearly ambitious enough. They generally focus on recycling more, or on increasing the recycling content of their plastic packaging. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">But <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.nationalgeographic.com\/2017\/07\/plastic-produced-recycling-waste-ocean-trash-debris-environment\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">more than 90% of plastic is not recycled<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, and plastic production is still increasing. To truly make a difference on plastic pollution, corporations must significantly and immediately <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">reduce<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> their plastic production.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>But while corporations stall, everyday people are tackling the plastic pollution problem head on.<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Despite the lack of significant action by the world\u2019s largest economies and corporations, it\u2019s people like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">you<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> who are leading the charge toward getting rid of throwaway plastics. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">All over the world, people are stepping forward to lobby businesses and governments for reductions and bans on throwaway plastics. A group of citizens from Veracruz, Mexico <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/mexico\/es\/Noticias\/2018\/Mayo\/Excelentes-noticias-Veracruz-camina-hacia-un-futuro-libre-de-plasticos\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">effectively lobbied for a ban<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> on plastic bags and straws in their state. Ullapool, a Scottish village, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/uk-scotland-highlands-islands-42439946\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">went plastic-free<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> after school children banded together to speak with business owners and staff about the issue. Nearly 100 cafes in Greece have <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/greece.greekreporter.com\/2018\/05\/18\/young-greeks-coffee-cup-campaign-tackles-plastic-trash\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">agreed to give discounts to customers who bring their own reusable cups<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, thanks to the efforts of a volunteer-led campaign there.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">And there\u2019s much more to come. With your help, we can do even more to hold corporations accountable for the plastic pollution they\u2019re creating. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Here\u2019s what you can do to help create a plastic-free future.<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Add a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-international-stateless\/2018\/04\/a7b9c72b-ocean-plastic-action-6.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Break Free From Plastic brand audit<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to your beach or community cleanup! The tour encouraged fast food chains in Hong Kong to phase out single-use plastic, including cutlery, packaging, styrofoam and plastic bags.<\/p><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Call out the brands for their polluting packaging on social media! Simply take a photo of the next piece of branded plastic waste you see outside near your house, school, beach, nature trail, or other places. Post the photo to social media, tag the brand, and use the hashtag <\/span><b>#IsThisYours?<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to let these companies know we\u2019re calling them out for polluting the planet with throwaway plastic. You can organize your own campaign to convince your local restaurant or supermarket to phase out wasteful plastic, send a letter to the editor of your local news outlet to bring attention to the issue, or start a community group and invite your friends to join the movement too!<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Join the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/plasticfreefuture\/\">Plastic-Free Future Facebook group<\/a> to share ideas, get the latest news, and learn from ocean protectors around the world. This growing global community is the place to go for all your questions about plastic pollution and how to stop it!<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We can no longer sustain a future that sees the equivalent of a truckload of plastic entering our oceans every minute of every single day. Real change is going to require phasing out single-use plastics, for our environment and for people around the world who depend on clean water.
