{"id":16997,"date":"2018-06-08T14:03:42","date_gmt":"2018-06-08T14:03:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/?p=16997"},"modified":"2021-12-01T13:51:43","modified_gmt":"2021-12-01T12:51:43","slug":"the-big-trade-war-distraction","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/story\/16997\/the-big-trade-war-distraction\/","title":{"rendered":"The big trade war distraction"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t get distracted by the \u201ctrade war\u201d on the front pages of the news. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It points our leaders away from what they should be focused on &#8212; <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/350.org\/7-days-until-g7\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">climate change<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and peace &#8212; and it distracts everyone from the larger overall problems with this global trade regime. \u00a0Focusing on steel quotas (however important) and peanut butter tariffs is ignoring the forest for the trees. The system was faulty before he came along. When EU Trade Commissioner <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/pro\/eu-trade-chief-marshals-leading-world-economies-against-trump\/?utm_source=POLITICO.EU&amp;utm_campaign=c9f1868edc-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2018_06_05_07_28&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_term=0_10959edeb5-c9f1868edc-189810753\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Malmstr\u00f6m said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cEurope is doing good. The U.S. is doing good as well, and that\u2019s why we shouldn\u2019t jeopardize this by entering into a trade war,\u201d she missed the point completely. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People in Europe, the US and elsewhere are not doing well at all. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oxfam.org\/en\/pressroom\/pressreleases\/2018-01-22\/richest-1-percent-bagged-82-percent-wealth-created-last-year\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inequality in the world<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> continues to climb. Politicians\u2019 being obsessed with growth without asking, \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.imf.org\/2018\/06\/06\/chart-of-the-week-the-rise-of-corporate-giants\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">growth for whom<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">?\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kateraworth.com\/doughnut\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">means that people are neglected and our environment <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ruined &#8212; sidelined in favour of a <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.changeeverything.info\/the-book\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">growth that benefits a small few<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Environmental indicators are also still getting worse, and the trade system contributes to this.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/systemicalternatives.org\/2018\/04\/25\/the-whole-of-mercosur-in-exchange-for-a-plate-of-beef\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201ccows for cars\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> trade agreement between <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mercosur\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mercosur<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> countries and the EU will only serve to increase meat consumption (and the deforestation caused by intensified soy cultivation for meat) and car usage, rather than putting <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/press-release\/15111\/greenpeace-calls-for-decrease-in-meat-and-dairy-production-and-consumption-for-a-healthier-planet\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">policy efforts into decreasing these two strains<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the planet. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So let\u2019s change the conversation. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tariffs and quotas should not be abused and used as a bullying tool by the powerful. Trade policy should be about trade only &#8211; and not dominate everything else as well. Current trade rules threaten the very laws that are meant to protect us from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/trade-leaks.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Regulatory-Cooperation-in-CETA.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">harmful chemicals<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2018\/may\/31\/justin-trudeau-kinder-morgan-pipeline-china-did-he-fear-being-sued?CMP=share_btn_tw\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">drive the transition<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to renewable energy. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Currently, trade policy is made by the powerful for the powerful. When the EU Commission was working on the trade deal with Japan, they met with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/corporateeurope.org\/international-trade\/2018\/05\/jefta-exclusive-trade-between-eu-negotiators-and-big-business\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">190 corporate lobbyists,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> but no trade union or small and medium-sized enterprise representatives. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sierraclub.org\/compass\/2017\/04\/will-trump-s-corporate-friends-rewrite-nafta\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over 85% of the so-called advisors to the US Trade Representative <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">were from corporations and their lobbies\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">before<\/span><\/i> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sierraclub.org\/press-releases\/2018\/04\/new-report-will-nafta-20-be-for-people-or-polluters\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trump came into office<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. How are these trade deals supposed to champion the interests of the wider public, if those negotiating the deal don\u2019t even speak with us?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is totally unacceptable. We do not need to buy into a neoliberal undermining of environmental policies in order to trade. A different trade system is possible. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/trade-leaks.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/10-PRINCIPLES-FOR-TRADE-ENGLISH-WEB.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A system that brings about transparent, just and fair trade rules<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. A system that respects national and cultural values, enables sustainable development and effectively carries out the aims of UN agreements &#8212; like the Paris Climate Agreement. A system that prioritises equality and a good life for future generations, and respects human rights and environmental treaties. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not just another world, but another trade system is possible.
