Similarly, pipelines owned by Energy Transfer Partners (ETP) and Sunoco (which is now owned by ETP) had an average of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/usa\/reports\/oil-and-water\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one spill incident every 11 days<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> since 2002. ETP is the company behind the Dakota Access Pipeline.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><b>But that\u2019s not all. <\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Science has shown that responding to the climate crisis means we urgently need to move away from fossil fuels towards renewable energy. Massive new oil pipelines do the exact opposite. They expand the production and consumption of fossil fuels, locking us into higher emissions and increasing our addiction to oil at precisely the wrong time. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On top of that, major pipelines cost billions of dollars to build, money that could be used to create <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/canada\/en\/recent\/green-jobs-report\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more jobs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and support the economy <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the environment if it were invested in clean energy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because of these and other concerns, many Indigenous communities are <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.treatyalliance.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">opposing plans to build new pipelines<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> through their territories, leading the growing movement against pipelines and for a better future for us all.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_17102\" style=\"width: 1210px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17102\" class=\"size-full wp-image-17102\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-international-stateless\/2018\/06\/GP0STRN51_Medium_res.jpg\" alt=\"Chief Na\u2019Moks in Metro Vancouver \u00a9 Rogue Collective\" width=\"1200\" height=\"801\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-international-stateless\/2018\/06\/GP0STRN51_Medium_res.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-international-stateless\/2018\/06\/GP0STRN51_Medium_res-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-international-stateless\/2018\/06\/GP0STRN51_Medium_res-768x513.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-international-stateless\/2018\/06\/GP0STRN51_Medium_res-1024x684.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-international-stateless\/2018\/06\/GP0STRN51_Medium_res-510x340.jpg 510w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-17102\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Thousands gathered in Vancouver, British Columbia for Indigenous-led &#8220;Protect the Inlet&#8221; mass mobilization against the Trans Mountain Expansion pipeline in March 2018.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rather than owning and addressing these issues, the pipeline industry has been using nefarious tactics to silence and undermine those standing up for Indigenous rights and a clean energy future. From fake grassroots (\u201castroturf\u201d) campaigns, to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/usa\/global-warming\/greenpeace-v-energy-transfer-partners-facts\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">baseless $900 million lawsuit<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> targeting Greenpeace and others, to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aclu.org\/blog\/free-speech\/rights-protesters\/why-did-private-security-contractor-treat-standing-rock\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hiring mercenaries<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to use warzone tactics against peaceful protesters, there seems to be no low to which this industry won\u2019t sink.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But even in the face of corporate intimidation, the beautiful and inspiring examples of people fighting back against the oil industry just keep coming. Here are five ways people like you are standing up to oil pipelines.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>1) Taking direct action against the TransMountain Expansion<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After massive nonviolent resistance, Texas pipeline giant Kinder Morgan has dumped is half-completed pipeline from the Canadian tar sands to the Pacific Coast on Justin Trudeau&#8217;s government.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Months ago, members of the Indigenous Tsleil-Waututh community were joined by allies, including Greenpeace Canada, in the construction of a Coast Salish Watch House (called \u201cKwekwecnewtxw\u201d) next to the pipeline construction site. The building of the Watch House was followed by mass peaceful civil disobedience against the project, which has resulted in about 200 people being arrested since March, including grandmothers and grandfathers, Greenpeace co-founder Rex Wyler, and two sitting Members of Parliament. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kinder Morgan may have backed down from this fight, but the resistance to this pipeline is not going away. The lawsuit is aimed at silencing critics and driving a wedge between Indigenous Water Protectors and allies such as Greenpeace. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This tactic has failed, and both Greenpeace and the wider movement have redoubled support for Indigenous-led pipeline resistance. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2>4) Engaging in civil disobedience to stop Line 3 construction<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Enbridge\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stopline3.org\/about\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Line 3 pipeline expansion project<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is yet another proposed pipeline from the Canadian tar sands to the US. Here too, Indigenous people are leading the fight. Honour the Earth <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.honorearth.org\/sandpiper_line_3_corridor\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">states<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cThe proposed new route endangers the Great Lakes, home to one-fifth of the world\u2019s fresh water, and some of the most delicate soils, aquifers and pristine lakes in northern Minnesota. The Indigenous-led L\u2019eau Est La Vie (\u2018Water is Life\u2019 in French) <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/nobbp.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">resistance camp<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that has sprung up to oppose this project opened last year with 12 straight days of prayer, beginning with a traditional Mayan prayer ceremony led by Do\u00f1a Teresa, a Maya Quich\u00e9 elder.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alex Speers-Roesch is the head of the oil campaign for Greenpeace Canada.
