This major commitment &#8211; the first by an electronics <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">manufacturing<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> company in Asia &#8211; comes after months of campaigning and global protests calling on<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Samsung to urgently set a clear renewable energy goal for its own operations as well as its supply chain.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Samsung&#8217;s announcement is a major step forward for the movement to build a renewably powered future. If the company follows through with meaningful actions, it will join the ranks of innovative business leaders recognising the sense of urgency around climate change and showing a different future is still possible,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> said Jennifer Morgan, Executive Director of Greenpeace International.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.samsung.com\/global\/samsung-electronics-to-expand-use-of-renewable-energy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">public statement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> released on its website, Samsung committed to:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adopt 100% renewable energy in the USA, Europe and China, where the company has 17 of its 38 global manufacturing factories, offices and buildings; <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Join the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdp.net\/en\/supply-chain\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CDP supply chain program<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which helps to identify and manage climate change risks, to lead change in its supply chain; and, <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Install onsite solar and geothermal energy in Gyeonggi province, South Korea where Samsung\u2019s key semiconductor factories are located.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The commitment precedes the launch of Samsung\u2019s sustainability report, which will disclose further details on the plan and the steps the company will undertake. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Samsung has<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the largest smartphone market share globally and is one of the main suppliers of key components to other major tech brands, with 38 production sites and more than 2,000 suppliers across the world. Renewable energy<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> currently accounts for only 1% of Samsung Electronics\u2019 total energy consumption, which amounted to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">16,000GWh in 2016.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Samsung Electronics is the first electronics manufacturing company in Asia to set a renewable energy target. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This commitment could have an enormous impact in reducing the company\u2019s <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">massive global manufacturing footprint<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and shows how critical <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">industry participation is in reducing emissions and accelerating the transition to renewable energy.
