Renewables account for only 1% of Samsung Electronics\u2019 total energy consumption.<\/p><\/div>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">remember when you shared this?<\/span><\/h2>\n<lite-youtube style=\"background-image: url('https:\/\/i.ytimg.com\/vi\/DmyxHLzt4Qo\/hqdefault.jpg');\" videoid=\"DmyxHLzt4Qo\" params=\"rel=0\"><\/lite-youtube>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After months of people-powered actions around the world, Samsung Electronics finally accepted our challenge to #DoWhatYouCant and <\/span><b>taken the first steps towards 100% renewable energy!<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This is great news for our planet and the hundreds of thousands of people around the world taking action for a renewably powered future.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>So what exactly has Samsung committed to?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1) A 100% renewable energy commitment in the US, China and Europe by 2020 (including all its own manufacturing factories).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2) Onsite installation of solar and geothermal energy in Korea, near its Hwaseong, Pyongtaek, and Suwon semiconductor plants.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Samsung also supports the government\u2019s national strategic plan to increase the country\u2019s renewable energy use by 20% by 2030<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3) Join the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdp.net\/en\/supply-chain\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CDP&#8217;s<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (formerly known as the Carbon Disclosure Project) <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">supply chain program <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">next year, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which helps to identify and manage climate change risks,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to lead change in their supply chain.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">See Samsung\u2019s full statement <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.samsung.com\/global\/samsung-electronics-to-expand-use-of-renewable-energy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What does this mean?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is a really important first step for Samsung to reduce its <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">massive global manufacturing footprint<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Just imagine, in 2016 alone, the tech giant\u2019s energy consumption amounted to 16,000GWh, that\u2019s the same as the Dominican Republic! This could help drive a faster transition away from fossil fuels like coal countries like China and South Korea.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If we see more ambitious actions from companies like Samsung and a shared responsibility then there is still time for us to turn the corner and build the renewably powered future we urgently need.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is key now is to make sure Samsung follows through on this commitment with meaningful actions that actually lead to more renewable energy and expands this same level of ambition to other key regions like Vietnam. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With your help, we will be watching to make sure they do!
