{"id":18001,"date":"2018-08-10T09:27:26","date_gmt":"2018-08-10T09:27:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/?p=18001"},"modified":"2019-11-06T09:48:05","modified_gmt":"2019-11-06T08:48:05","slug":"new-zealand-ban-on-single-use-plastic-bags-a-win-for-people-power","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/press-release\/18001\/new-zealand-ban-on-single-use-plastic-bags-a-win-for-people-power\/","title":{"rendered":"New Zealand ban on single-use plastic bags a win for people power"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Auckland, New Zealand &#8211; \u00a0New Zealand\u2019s government today announced it will<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mfe.govt.nz\/consultation\/plasticshoppingbags\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> phase out single-use plastic bags<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by 2019, a move Greenpeace is calling a win for people power and another big step towards addressing the global plastic pollution crisis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Emily Hunter, Oceans Campaigner at Greenpeace New Zealand said:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis could be a major leap forward in turning the tide on ocean plastic pollution in New Zealand and an important first step in protecting marine life such as sea turtles and whales, from the growing plastic waste epidemic.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The proposal will be open for public consultation until 14 September 2018 and will include options for the date the phase-out is to be complete by, what bags should be included, any retailers that should be exempted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Around the world, governments are implementing strategies to end plastic pollution with measures from levies, bottle deposits to banning a wide range of single-use plastics.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis is a great first step, but now New Zealand needs a broad and comprehensive strategy to eliminate all sources of plastic pollution. Up to 12.7 million metric tonnes of plastic waste enter the ocean every year \u2013 that\u2019s the equivalent of one garbage truck every minute and single-use plastic bags are just the tip of the iceberg,\u201d said Hunter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s time for the world\u2019s largest governments and companies to recognise that we cannot recycle our way out of this problem. The crisis we\u2019re facing requires comprehensive regulation and corporate action to immediately move away from single-use plastics.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Greenpeace New Zealand joined the movement for a regulatory bag ban on single-use plastic bags last year, quickly gaining widespread support with 65,000 signature petition delivered to New Zealand\u2019s parliament in February 2018.
