Go 100% renewables\u201d Greenpeace has been demanding the tech giant to commit to 100% renewable energy and show leadership on climate action.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/story\/17140\/you-did-it-samsung-chooses-renewable-energy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Just a few months ago<\/a> you helped us convince Samsung, the world\u2019s biggest electronics company, to join the tide of businesses championing renewable energy. In June, this South Korean giant announced the first steps towards moving its huge (and growing) production lines from relying on fossil fuels to being <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.samsung.com\/global\/samsung-electronics-to-expand-use-of-renewable-energy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">powered by renewables<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the bout of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/story\/18156\/from-fires-to-floods-this-is-what-extreme-weather-looks-like\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">extreme weather<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> happening across the globe right now, Samsung\u2019s announcement gives a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thediplomat.com\/2018\/08\/koreas-heatwave-is-an-opportunity-for-samsung-to-act\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">glimmer of climate hope<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the global movement to switch to renewables as fast as possible. It was also <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.koreaherald.com\/view.php?ud=20180614000761\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">huge news in South Korea<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Samsung\u2019s home country, where the government has embarked on an ambitious plan to transition away from nuclear and fossil fuels. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Meaningful actions from powerful companies like Samsung are crucial if we are to stop catastrophic climate change.<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At this point in the game, we simply can\u2019t afford anything less than ambitious action, so at Greenpeace East Asia, we have spelt out the exact steps<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Samsung needs to take in order to meet its promise to power its factories in China, in the US and in Europe with renewable energy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Given Samsung prides itself on<\/span><b> leadership, innovation and imagining the impossible<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, we believe it can do even more &#8211; by becoming a true pioneer for renewables at a time when the world could really do with some. This means moving to renewable energy not just in China, the US and Europe, as Samsung <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/story\/17140\/you-did-it-samsung-chooses-renewable-energy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">announced in June,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> but also in South Korea and in Vietnam where it also has operations. To make it even easier for Samsung we underlined exactly what they need to do in each region, and have sent <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/korea\/multimedia\/publications\/2018\/ce\/doing-bigger-things-the-road-to-re100-for-samsung-Electronics-en\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the key decision makers at the company. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It isn\u2019t going to be easy but we have to believe that with courage, ambition, and concrete action we can stop climate change. Just recently Facebook <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.fb.com\/news\/2018\/08\/renewable-energy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">announced that by 2020 ALL of its global operations will be powered by 100% renewable energy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> With your help, we are going to do everything in our power to ensure that more companies like Samsung and Facebook do their part to make a renewably powered world a reality.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Insung Lee is a campaigner for Greenpeace East Asia<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<div class=\"EmptyMessage\">Block content is empty.
