A large and colorful kite, representing iconic marine life, was flown from boats on the East River, alongside an aerial banner reading \u201cGlobal Ocean \u2013 Global Treaty!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The negotiations are the result of a decade-long process and could conclude as early as 2020. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe fate of our oceans is in the hands of everyone in these negotiations,\u201d <\/span>said Dr Sandra Schoettner of Greenpeace&#8217;s global ocean sanctuaries campaign<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, speaking from outside the UN. \u201cIt&#8217;s no exaggeration to say that the governments meeting today are making history as we speak. It is urgent they create a strong ocean treaty which allows us to create a global network of ocean sanctuaries.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The treaty is crucial because there are no global rules to protect the vast majority of the global oceans \u2013 but quite a few to exploit them. As a consequence, the oceans are being pushed to their limits by overfishing, pollution, climate change and other human activity. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the absence of a global treaty, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a mere 1% of the global oceans are currently protected. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>Dr Schoettner continued:<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cOceans beyond borders cover almost half of our planet. They belong to us all, but <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">if <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">we do not act now we will lose vital habitats and species before we even know what we\u2019ve lost. Now world leaders need to show the vision to achieve the scientific imperative of protecting at least 30% of the oceans by 2030.
