Wind, solar and biomass now supply more than <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.carbonbrief.org\/eu-got-less-electricity-from-coal-than-renewables-2017\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">20% of electricity generated in the EU<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, up from less than 10% in 2010.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But it\u2019s a different story when we look at transport. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Transport is the only major sector where <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/clima\/policies\/transport\/vehicles_en\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">greenhouse gas emissions have gone up in recent years<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jato.com\/global-car-sales-2-4-2017-due-soaring-demand-europe-asia-pacific-latin-america\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rising car sales<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and a soaring demand for larger vehicles (like SUVs) driving the problem.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the automobile industry quite literally steering plans to tackle climate change in the wrong direction, some governments are now talking of forcing them onto a path that\u2019s better for the climate. Their predictions factored in the fact that, due to public concerns about the health impact of diesels, the sale of diesel-powered cars is already falling dramatically. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Next, the research team calculated the \u2018carbon budget\u2019 that can be attributed to the transport industry (the amount of CO<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that can be pumped out while keeping warming below a certain temperature threshold).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What they found is that, without laws to drive change, the rate at which electric vehicles will be introduced to the market won\u2019t be enough to stop the industry blowing through its carbon budget.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The two graphs below sum things up. The top one shows what the researchers think will happen over the coming few decades unless any action is taken. That means we\u2019ve got about a decade to completely ban the sale of petrol and diesel vehicles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At this stage we should also state the research only looks at the car industry in Europe, and not vehicles in Asia and the Americas. More research is need to cover these regions. And it\u2019s entirely possible that some countries would need to phase out fossil fuel cars even quicker.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/PqSUJ2IDwA4\" width=\"700\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><br \/>\n<b>The Norway model<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So how realistic is it do this by 2028?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s estimated that by the end of 2018, only <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2018\/aug\/26\/electric-cars-exceed-1m-in-europe-as-sales-soar-by-more-than-40-per-cent\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2.35% of new cars and vans sold in Europe<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will be electric. So switching the entire industry from being a high carbon one to a low carbon one, might seem like an impossible task in 10 short years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But here\u2019s the good news; Norway is showing how fast things can change.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Norway, a combination of tax incentives and government policies are driving staggering electric car growth. Source: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Plug-in_electric_vehicles_in_Norway\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wikipedia<\/span><\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p><b>We need to think beyond cars<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cutting pollution from transport doesn\u2019t only have to be a choice between fossil fuel power cars and electric ones.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A truly sustainable plan for transport should be about constructing more bike lanes, building cycling infrastructure that would make it easier for people to get around without cars. It should be about making public transport more affordable, leading to more people using trains or buses to get around. And it should be about investing in car sharing schemes, and\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/sustainable-business\/2016\/jul\/23\/car-sharing-helps-environment-pollution\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reducing the amount of vehicles on the road<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Following such a path would be a sensible for a whole raft of reasons. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It would mean reduced pressure on natural resources, as fewer cars would mean less demand for steel and plastic used to build vehicles. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It would mean a quicker route to cleaning up our air, as more polluting cars could be taken off the roads sooner. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And most of all, it would mean an even greater chance of keeping under 1.5\u00b0C degrees of warming.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>Richard Casson is the digital engagement lead of the air pollution campaign\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"EmptyMessage\">Block content is empty.
