One year on from the historic adoption of an international treaty which aims to make these weapons illegal, it is urgent that we step up the treaty&#8217;s implementation and remind ourselves why these weapons of mass destruction must be banned to build a peaceful world.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>1) \u00a0Nuclear weapons cause catastrophic harm<\/b><\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone  caption-style-medium caption-alignment-center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-international-stateless\/2018\/09\/edd2f7d0-gp05tm_medium_res-1024x683.jpg\" title=\"Praying Monks - Hiroshima Atomic Bombing 60th Anniversary. Japan 2005<div class=\"credit icon-left\">  \u00a9 Jeremy Sutton-Hibbert \/ Greenpeace <\/div><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMy beloved city of Hiroshima suddenly became desolation, with heaps of ash and rubble, skeletons and blackened corpses.\u201d Setsuko Thurlow<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hibakusha (survivor) of the Hiroshima bombing.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This haunting witness account reminds us of the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.icanw.org\/the-facts\/catastrophic-harm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">enormous destructive power of nuclear weapons<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Nuclear weapons are<\/span><b> totally obsolete and unable to meet today\u2019s challenges<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. According to estimates (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalzero.org\/get-the-facts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Global Zero, 2011<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) it&#8217;s close to <\/span><b>$1000 billion<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the decade of 2010-2020.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Imagine if this money went instead to health, education, the fight against climate change, assistance to survivors, and other services to ensure human security.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>4) Nuclear weapons carry huge proliferation risks<\/b><\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone  caption-style-medium caption-alignment-center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-international-stateless\/2018\/09\/94b15880-gp0qva_medium_res-1024x683.jpg\" title=\"Peace Doves - Hiroshima Atomic Bombing 60th Anniversary. Rocky Flats, Colorado, nuclear trigger factory.<div class=\"credit icon-left\"> \u00a9 Rex Weyler \/ Greenpeace <\/div><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p><b>But this could change soon.&nbsp;<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While biological and chemical weapons have been prohibited worldwide, since 1972 and 1993 respectively, nuclear weapons have not been constrained up to now. This is a legal anomaly which is in the process of being fully corrected with the&nbsp;<\/span><b>Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons which is set to come into force in 2020<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and was adopted in 2017 by 122 states at the United Nations.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, states that have nuclear weapons, including France, have boycotted this Treaty. But the pressure on <\/span>the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.icanw.org\/the-facts\/nuclear-arsenals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>nine nuclear-armed states<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;is building &#8211; from the growing number of nations and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dontbankonthebomb.com\/who-divests\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">financial institutions<\/a> who are ceasing to invest in the production of these weapons systems, to thousands of people speaking out across the globe.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>So what can we do?<\/b><\/h3>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons is a roadmap to achieving the total elimination of these weapons of mass destruction. <\/span><b>To enter into force, the Treaty must be signed and ratified by 50 countries.
