So we need cities that serve people first, instead of being dominated by cars and traffic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cars are noisy, smelly, take up precious pace, and they are really bad for our health. More than <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.who.int\/airpollution\/en\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">95% of the world\u2019s population breathes dangerous air<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is especially bad news as air pollution is the fourth-leading cause of death worldwide, killing 4.2 million people globally every year. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s also a very serious issue for the health of our planet. Recently,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/story\/18562\/weve-got-10-years-to-ditch-fossil-fuel-cars-or-its-game-over-for-the-climate\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Greenpeace released a report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> based on new research from the German Aerospace Centre that shows we only have ten years to get rid of fossil fuel vehicles if we want to avoid the worst impacts of climate change. The age of fossil fuel vehicles must come to an end.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We have a vision for future cities that are clean, connected, and community-focused. Last month on International Car-Free Day, we got a taste of what the world could be like if we realize future.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_18764\" style=\"width: 1210px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-18764\" class=\"size-full wp-image-18764\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-international-stateless\/2018\/10\/5df12c2b-elodie-mertz-greenpeace-belgium.jpg\" alt=\"International Car-Free Day in Belgium \u00a9 Elodie Mertz \/ Greenpeace Belgium\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-international-stateless\/2018\/10\/5df12c2b-elodie-mertz-greenpeace-belgium.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-international-stateless\/2018\/10\/5df12c2b-elodie-mertz-greenpeace-belgium-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-international-stateless\/2018\/10\/5df12c2b-elodie-mertz-greenpeace-belgium-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-international-stateless\/2018\/10\/5df12c2b-elodie-mertz-greenpeace-belgium-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-international-stateless\/2018\/10\/5df12c2b-elodie-mertz-greenpeace-belgium-510x340.jpg 510w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-18764\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">International Car-Free Day activities in Belgium included a bicycle parade through the centre of Brussels.<\/p><\/div>\n<h2>Here are five ways your city will improve if it starts putting people before cars:<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Less air and noise pollution.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When Paris\u2019 city centre went car-free in 2015, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2015\/oct\/03\/pariss-first-attempt-at-car-free-day-brings-big-drop-in-air-and-noise-pollution\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">levels of nitrogen dioxide dropped by up to 40%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in parts of the city, and sound levels dropped by half in the city centre.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">space for living \u2014 not traffic. Freeing up roads from the dominance of traffic makes more room for parks, squares, and community life. Green spaces can also welcome back some of our lost urban biodiversity.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Better infrastructure for active transport: Walking, bicycling, skateboarding, rollerblading, and other forms of active transport are good for our bodies and the planet. Less space for cars means more space for bike lanes and safe pedestrian infrastructure on our streets. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More money left for better, renewable energy-powered public transport and more sustainable, electric car sharing schemes. Building and maintaining roads for cars costs a lot of money! Shifting that investment over to sustainable transport means we can have the same convenient mobility without the carbon footprint.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Getting rid of roads and reducing pollution-emitting cars will help us cool the planet. The ones that allow us\u00a0to\u00a0live big, bold, beautiful lives. Carnivals. Picnics. Street parties. Street art. Dancing. Singing. Moving. Shaking. Creating. Connecting. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So let\u2019s not stop at \u00a0International Car-Free Day. Every day, we can move our cities forward to become places for people and the\u00a0planet. Places that make us happy. Places we love.
