Our Indigenous territory encompasses the northern part of Norway, Sweden, Finland and Northwest Russia. The <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">land determines our Indigenous Sa\u0301mi lifestyle, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">how to live in balance, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">h<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ow to treat each other, how to organise politically and how to sustain ourselves. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our whole survival depends on the land. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We have been living on this land, with this land for thousands of years. And we want live here many thousand years more. This land is our home. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But now, our home, S\u00e1pmi, is under threat. The governments of states and big international companies have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ejatlas.org\/conflict\/saami-metsahallitus-forest-conflict-inari-finland%20o\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">already been exploiting our territory<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with mines, logging and industrial expansion. But now they have a new idea: to build a massive industrial railway across our land, linking it to the Barents Sea. They have noticed that climate change is melting the Arctic sea ice and that a shipping route between Europe and Asia might soon open up across the northern coast of Russia. First the railway would divide the land in half, making it impossible for our reindeer to wander freely and find food in the harsh winters. Next would come all the traffic and infrastructure; access roads and noise that would further industrialise the land. Once the high speed cargo trains start running they could hit and kill many of our reindeer that might unknowingly walk or sleep on the tracks. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But this would just be the beginning. In order to justify the railway, the Finnish government is encouraging investments in more pulp mills, more mines and increasing the rates of industrial logging of our forests. The forests in our territory are some of the most northern forests in the world. If you saw how beautiful they were, you would agree that logging them to turn into toilet paper to sell in China should be a crime. These forests and the old trees provide shelter and food that the reindeer need to supplement their diet when the sun fades for many months in the winter and the temperatures sink to brutally cold levels. <\/span>Without the forests, the reindeer will disappear. Without the reindeer, S\u00e1mi culture will disappear.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But it&#8217;s not just our reindeer that rely on these forests for survival. You do too. Earlier this month the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipcc.ch\/news_and_events\/pr_181008_P48_spm.shtml\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IPCC released their newest report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> finding that humanity is on a collision course with climate change if we don\u2019t fundamentally shift our current resource use, which is at a level that has, \u201cno documented historic precedent.\u201d \u00a0And this does not only mean shifting to solar and wind energy. Crucially it also means the preservation of the world\u2019s forests as natural solutions to climate catastrophe. This type of recklessness does not match the pleas from climate scientists and the already real effects of climate change we are seeing globally.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We all have a responsibility. You do not have to be a lawyer or biologist; we all have the power to protect, preserve, resist, and speak for the Earth.
