With more than <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.makesmthng.org\/#calendar\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">273 events in 38 countries<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MAKE SMTHNG Week asks people to #BuyNothing and #MakeSmthng instead. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1VtJSVgraJcvA4zP8OpvTfQKFsh4EKmtkSVAitJexmAc\/edit\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We are already drowning in stuff<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 stuffed wardrobes, garages, and kitchens &#8211; yet we keep on shopping for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more fashion, gadgets, food, single-use plastic, toys, and cars. With our throwaway lifestyles we are fuelling climate change, pollution and the destruction of people\u2019s homes and irreplaceable natural wonders. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MAKE SMTHNG Week offers a fun and creative way out of this wasteful consumerism,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d said Robin Perkins, Make SMTHNG campaigner at Greenpeace. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By sharing, caring, and repairing things we can make more of what we already own and give our beautiful planet a break,\u201d he added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Greenpeace, its global partners \u2014 <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fashionrevolution.org\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fashion Revolution<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.breakfreefromplastic.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">#BreakFreeFromPlastic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.shareable.net\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shareable<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.artsthread.com\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arts Thread<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the Fab Labs Network and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/fab.city\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fab City Global Initiative<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, will bring together hundreds of designers, artists and makers to lead workshops where people can learn creative techniques of reuse, repairing, fashion upcycling and DIY.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Events include making sustainable Christmas presents, living a plastic-free life, community repair cafes, books and clothes swaps, and zero waste cooking \u2014 in 32 countries from Qatar to Peru, Canada, India, Germany, Italy, UK, South Africa and Spain.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/story\/7493\/shopping-doesnt-make-us-happy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shopping does not make us happy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But being with friends and people, learning new skills, and valuing what we already have, does. So this Black Friday, buy nothing and make something!&#8221; said Perkins. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On August first this year, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.overshootday.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">humanity used up more natural resources than the planet is able to reproduce in a year<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The over-consumption of convenience products like fast-fashion, single use paper and plastics, gadgets or toys designed not to last, and industrially-produced food, is pushing our planet to its limits. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cLarge corporations continue to put profits first, while they reduce the quality, repairability and versatility of their products. Through omnipresent advertising we are told, again and again, to buy more and more stuff we don\u2019t need. Companies won\u2019t change unless we show them people want something different.
