{"id":19506,"date":"2018-11-22T04:51:52","date_gmt":"2018-11-22T04:51:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/?p=19506"},"modified":"2019-11-06T09:47:46","modified_gmt":"2019-11-06T08:47:46","slug":"samsung-ikea-get-behind-koreas-right-to-renewable-energy-initiative","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/press-release\/19506\/samsung-ikea-get-behind-koreas-right-to-renewable-energy-initiative\/","title":{"rendered":"Samsung, IKEA get behind Korea\u2019s \u2018Right to Renewable Energy Initiative\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seoul, Korea\u00a0 \u2013 12 corporations, including Samsung Electronics, IKEA Korea and AB InBev, have publicly shown their support for the Right to Renewable Energy Initiative which launched today at the Korean National Assembly.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">[1]<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The coalition, comprised of 45 Members of Parliament and six civil society groups (Biodiversity Foundation, ENET, Greenpeace Seoul, KFEM, KoSIF and WWF Korea), aims to push for a renewable energy procurement policy and renewable energy expansion in South Korea. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nicolas Ingels, director of procurement and sustainability at ABInBev East Asia, said: \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAt AB InBev we have a strong belief in the necessity, as well as in the business and economic value, of renewable energy. I hope starting from this initiative, we can together make a better environment for companies to \u2018choose renewable energy\u2019 more easily in Korea.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Jinsun Lee, campaigner at Greenpeace East Asia in Seoul, said:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn about 70 countries around the world, corporates can purchase renewable electricity separately from other fossil fuel sources. However, there are currently no corporate renewable energy procurement mechanisms available in South Korea. Even those corporations that have a will to use more renewables cannot purchase them. This is clearly a roadblock to Korea\u2019s energy transition and our fight against climate change.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I am hopeful, because today we have seen the start of a positive domino effect in corporate renewable advocacy. After Samsung\u2019s announcement of its renewable goal, more companies are following suit. The declaration of renewable expansion and the support for the procurement policy by the 12 corporations clearly showed that there is increasingly more corporate leadership on renewable power.
