Riyadi in South Jakarta.&quot;,&quot;focus_image&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;credits&quot;:&quot;\\u00a9 Jurnasyanto Sukarno \\\/ Greenpeace&quot;},{&quot;image_src&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;image_srcset&quot;:false,&quot;image_sizes&quot;:false,&quot;alt_text&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:false,&quot;focus_image&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;credits&quot;:&quot;&quot;}]}}\"><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the last few<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> months alone,<\/span> street artists painted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/press-release\/19214\/20-artists-present-worldwide-street-art-exhibition-to-end-deforestation-for-palm-oil\/\">murals in 20 cities<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> around the world to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">draw attention to rainforest destruction for palm<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> oil.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Activists<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/press-release\/18608\/greenpeace-occupies-refinery-loaded-with-dirty-palm-oil-in-indonesia\/\">occupied one of Wilmar\u2019s palm oil refineries<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/press-release\/19379\/palm-oil-shipment-heading-to-europe-delayed-by-greenpeace-for-over-24-hours\/\">intercepted a<\/a><\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/press-release\/19379\/palm-oil-shipment-heading-to-europe-delayed-by-greenpeace-for-over-24-hours\/\">tanker<\/a> carrying Wilmar\u2019s palm oil products into Europe &#8211; twice!<\/p>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then Greenpeace activists and supporters confronted one of Wilmar\u2019s biggest customers: the snack food giant <\/span>Mondelez, the makers of Oreo cookies. Together we called on them to live <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">up to their &#8216;no deforestation&#8217; claims. Mondelez along with other brands told Wilmar it had to reform. All this&nbsp;pressure, combined with the million-plus people demanding change meant they could no longer ignore us.<\/p>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thanks to over 1.3 million of you who called on the biggest global brands to drop rainforest destroyers &#8211; we have been able to move the <\/span>world\u2019s largest palm oil trader<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span>Wilmar to action. <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They have now&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">published a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/press-release\/19898\/worlds-largest-palm-forest-destroyers-nowhere-to-hide\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">groundbreaking plan<\/span><\/a>&nbsp;<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to map and monitor its suppliers and, ultimately, stop buying from forest destroyers<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">! <\/span><\/p>\n\n<p>If Wilmar sticks to its word, forest destroyers will have nowhere to hide. This could change the entire industry; other traders will be under pressure to do the same.<\/p>\n\n<p>Brands and traders who promised to clean up their supply chains by 2020 have so far come up short. With less than 400 days to go, time is running out to meet commitments.<\/p>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now Wilmar needs to <\/span>put its promises into action<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and other palm oil companies need to do the same. If that happens, it would be the beginning of the end for deforestation for palm oil.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p>This is not over by any means<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Greenpeace will be closely watching to make sure Wilmar delivers and consumer companies follow suit.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ultimately, brands and traders have to keep to their promise and protect forests by 2020. &nbsp;Today is a significant milestone but we\u2019ll save the real celebrating until then.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Annisa Rahmawati is a forests campaigner at Greenpeace Indonesia<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This could be the beginning of the end for deforestation for palm oil.
