{"id":20144,"date":"2018-12-20T04:03:55","date_gmt":"2018-12-20T04:03:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/?p=20144"},"modified":"2019-11-06T09:47:38","modified_gmt":"2019-11-06T08:47:38","slug":"greenpeace-condemns-japan-governments-reported-withdrawal-from-iwc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/press-release\/20144\/greenpeace-condemns-japan-governments-reported-withdrawal-from-iwc\/","title":{"rendered":"Greenpeace condemns Japan government\u2019s reported withdrawal from IWC"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tokyo, Japan &#8211; Greenpeace condemns the Japanese Government\u2019s decision to withdraw from the International Whaling Commission (IWC) to resume commercial whaling &#8211; a decision likely to be announced next week according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-japan-iwc\/japan-to-withdraw-from-international-whaling-commission-kyodo-news-idUSKCN1OJ070\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Japanese media reports.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sam Annesley, Executive Director at Greenpeace Japan said:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis is a grave mistake which is out of step with the rest of the world. Greenpeace urges the government of Japan to reconsider its decision.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;This snub to multilateralism is unacceptable and deeply concerning but let us not forget that the Japanese fleet has continued its operations in violation of the findings of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in past years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;The Japanese Government has a history of failing to work with the IWC on conservation initiatives designed to protect and recover whale species, many of which are yet to return to healthy population numbers since widespread commercial whaling was ended over 30 years ago.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;In the past countries like the Netherlands have left the IWC and later returned. Ultimately, the protection of the world&#8217;s oceans and marine life needs global cooperation.
