{"id":20180,"date":"2018-12-21T12:08:58","date_gmt":"2018-12-21T11:08:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/?p=20180"},"modified":"2021-09-07T11:15:32","modified_gmt":"2021-09-07T09:15:32","slug":"hope-is-an-act-of-courage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/story\/20180\/hope-is-an-act-of-courage\/","title":{"rendered":"2018: In difficult times, hope is an act of courage"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flooding in Japan, unprecedented&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-018-07447-1?utm_source=twt_nnc&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_campaign=naturenews&amp;sf202703441=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">monsoons<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in India, a nearly 30% increase in&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2018\/12\/181212121857.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rainfall<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> throughout the Americas and 40% across Europe. Africa is seeing deadly&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov\/products\/international\/africa\/africa_hazard.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">droughts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> across Somalia, Ethiopia and Kenya. Australia, Greece, Sweden, Portugal and the American Northwest\u2019s horizons glowed red with&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.com\/environment\/2018\/07\/are-fires-in-europe-the-result-of-climate-change-\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wildfires<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> because of heatwaves and drier seasons. Climate change exacerbates extreme weather events. Yet, we continue to burn fossil fuels like&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalobserver.com\/2018\/12\/12\/analysis\/co2-vs-cops\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">never before<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/27692-deforestation.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">forests are disappearing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at a rate of roughly 27 football (soccer) fields a minute. In real and frightening numbers, that\u2019s 18.7 million acres to create more farms to feed more livestock and plant more palm oil.&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.carbonbrief.org\/tropical-forests-no-longer-carbon-sinks-because-human-activity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cutting down trees<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> not only deprives us of a natural way to absorb carbon dioxide, it decimates local communities who rely on the forest for survival.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coastal populations are being pillaged by industrial fishing fleets, hell-bent on catching anything that moves in the sea. 127 million tonnes of fish \u2014 not to mention bycatch, like dolphins, sharks and sea-turtles \u2014 &nbsp;was&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fao.org\/3\/i9540en\/I9540EN.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">taken out of our oceans<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 2016 alone.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone wp-image-20186 size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2500\" height=\"1669\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-international-stateless\/2018\/12\/f651a260-gp0stsla8_pressmedia.jpg\" title=\"Fathers of Lost Fishermen in Senegal \u00a9 Cl\u00e9ment Tardif \/ Greenpeace\" alt=\"Fathers of Lost Fishermen in Senegal \u00a9 Cl\u00e9ment Tardif \/ Greenpeace\" class=\"wp-image-20186\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-international-stateless\/2018\/12\/f651a260-gp0stsla8_pressmedia.jpg 2500w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-international-stateless\/2018\/12\/f651a260-gp0stsla8_pressmedia-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-international-stateless\/2018\/12\/f651a260-gp0stsla8_pressmedia-768x513.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-international-stateless\/2018\/12\/f651a260-gp0stsla8_pressmedia-1024x684.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-international-stateless\/2018\/12\/f651a260-gp0stsla8_pressmedia-2046x1366.jpg 2046w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-international-stateless\/2018\/12\/f651a260-gp0stsla8_pressmedia-510x340.jpg 510w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2500px) 100vw, 2500px\" \/><figcaption>Due to industrial and illegal overfishing, Senegalese fishermen now have to venture farther and farther out to sea, risking their lives in the process.<div class=\"credit icon-left\">  \u00a9 Cl\u00e9ment Tardif \/ Greenpeace<\/div><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The science is crystal clear, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theweathernetwork.com\/news\/articles\/we-have-until-2030-to-save-the-world-what-do-we-do-now-to-tackle-climate-change\/114959\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">we have 12 years<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to turn things around.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We need to ask ourselves, as a species and as part of a global and interconnected planetary ecosystem; what is our role in all of this? Suicide by consumption, or stewards of a healthy and prosperous future for all species?<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If it\u2019s the latter, we will need to accept three grim but simple truths:<\/span><\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Short-term profiteers and selfish power structures have bullied the Earth for too long, and now she\u2019s pushing back.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many global leaders \u2014 people who could quickly make changes away from unsustainable policies \u2014 are either unwitting, unconcerned or wilfully ignorant of the growing planetary crisis.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Powerful people that block solutions \u2014 like renewable energy, ocean and forest protection and sustainable agriculture \u2014 are guilty of mass murder. And the&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/agenda\/2018\/02\/countries-behind-global-renewable-energy-growth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">renewable energy evolution<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is happening in surprising places, like China, the US and India. Everyday people in these countries, tired of sacrificing their health and their futures to coal-powered governments, are&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/explore\/energy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pushing their leaders<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to make a fair and just transition towards cheap and readily available renewable energy.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Electronic industry&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/press-release\/18302\/sony-100-renewables-climate-change\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">leaders<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have been feeling the same pressure and are&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/story\/17140\/you-did-it-samsung-chooses-renewable-energy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">responding<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with plans to take the CO2 out of the products they make.&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/press-release\/18544\/10-years-goodbye-to-petrol-diesel-cars\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The internal combustion engine remains a challenge<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that we must continue to stand up to, but <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a revisioning of the social fabric of our cities that is nothing short of a revolution has seen<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> more <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/uk.reuters.com\/article\/us-electricvehicles-iea\/number-of-electric-vehicles-on-roads-reaches-three-million-iea-idUKKCN1IV0NE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">electric vehicles<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on our roads than ever before<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. We are getting better at protecting what matters.<\/b><\/h3>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This year we almost secured an&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/story\/19163\/governments-have-failed-to-protect-the-antarctic-but-this-isnt-over\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Antarctic sanctuary<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u2018Almost\u2019 doesn\u2019t mean failure, because with that came many victories; like the krill industry being a&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/press-release\/17679\/krill-fishing-protect-antarctic-ocean\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">step more sustainable<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2018\/nov\/19\/marine-reserves-size-protected-wildlife-five-times-bigger-usa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more protected marine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> areas than ever before, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and an unstoppable people-powered movement demanding ocean sanctuaries, a call that can&#8217;t be ignored<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Industries are hearing you. One of the world\u2019s largest producers of canned tuna is taking a&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/story\/19042\/people-powered-progress-on-tuna\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hard look<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at their practices. There\u2019s good news for the fragile biodiversity of Indonesia\u2019s forests, as well, because Wilmar, a massive palm oil producer, has a plan to&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/press-release\/19898\/worlds-largest-palm-forest-destroyers-nowhere-to-hide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">clean up its supply chain<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. We\u2019ve had enough and we\u2019re taking matters into our own hands.<\/b><\/h3>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This isn\u2019t just about the backlash against self-interested decision-makers that has given rise to movements across the planet, like the&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/rebellion.earth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Extinction Rebellion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2018\/sep\/08\/rise-for-climate-protests-san-francisco-new-york\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rise of Climate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2018\/nov\/30\/climate-change-strike-thousands-of-students-to-join-national-protest\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Strike4Climate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/gofossilfree.org\/break-free-2018-heres-what-happened\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BreakFree<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It\u2019s about unlikely heroes taking a stand and shaking up the world. Young people like 15 year-old Greta Thunberg, who&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=VFkQSGyeCWg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blasted leaders<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at the UN Climate Change conference in Poland this month for not doing enough. Or&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/2018\/11\/2\/18029146\/climate-change-lawsuit-children-scotus-supreme-court-juliana\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Xiuhtezcatl Martinez<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who, along with 20 other youth activists, are suing the US government for not taking the threat of climate change seriously enough. <\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Legal courts across the globe are increasingly becoming the stage where ordinary citizens are&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/act\/climate-justice\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">taking on the powers above them<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The government of the Netherlands was&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/court-netherlands-endangering-citizens-with-emissions\/a-18539456\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">forced to cut carbon emissions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when civil society took them to court. We are now seeing a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mg.co.za\/article\/2018-12-18-ngos-launch-legal-action-against-france-over-climate\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">similar case<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> being brought against the French government, while Fillipino<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en_us\/article\/3k7dv9\/the-woman-going-after-big-energy-for-the-typhoon-that-killed-her-family\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Joanna Susteno<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is going after the distant and faceless fossil fuel companies who helped create typhoon Haiyan. A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/20181217-indigenous-argentine-group-sues-energy-multinationals\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">similar case<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is being echoed in Argentina. The climate justice movement is growing and is unstoppable.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019re also standing up to the planned obsolescence in the things we buy. The<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.makesmthng.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make Smthng movement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is gathering pace with an eye towards empowering makers and repairers to change the story of \u201coverconsumption\u201d to \u201cbuy less and waste less\u201d. This is how we can all <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rediscover our creativity and community. This is how we made \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/2018\/nov\/07\/single-use-named-word-of-the-year-2018-environment-collins-dictionary\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">single use<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d the word of the year.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These reasons for hope are all underpinned by one simple notion: We as a species are connected by two things: our common humanity and our shared planet. The people that will take us into a green and peaceful future are those that understand the two are inseparably linked.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When faced with the harsh reality that time is running out, hope is what gives us the strength to speak our truths \u2014 both grim and positive \u2014 to the power structures that seek to separate humanity from the Earth we live on.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now is the time to join the millions of truth-sayers who understands the science and the urgency.
