It was 3am and all I could think about was the laborious task I needed to complete. Would I take the black skirt or the blue one? The silk shirt or the cashmere? And shoes. What about shoes?!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I was about to embark on a long holiday, traversing seasons and oceans and was consumed with the crippling decision of what stylish, comfortable, and versatile outfits to pack in my suitcase. A necessary job that should only take a few hours, took me\u2026days. Quite simply, I was faced with a mountain of clothes, an overwhelming amount of choice, and a very, very messy room. If only I had Marie Kondo in my life\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/MarieKondo?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#MarieKondo<\/a>&#39;s packing tips are pure GENIUS (and sooo satisfying to watch, tbh). <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/7U7bi5fWNL\">pic.twitter.com\/7U7bi5fWNL<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; InStyle (@InStyle) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/InStyle\/status\/1083876211548401664?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 12, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thanks to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.netflix.com\/hk-en\/title\/80209379\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Netflix show<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> triggered by her best selling book, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/konmari.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marie Kondo<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has become a household name for all de-cluttering and re-organising woes. Hoarders be damned. There\u2019s a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/article\/tidying-up-with-marie-kondo-reaction-twitter\/#snX5olCtfkql\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">global cleaning binge<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> happening right now and there are no excuses. For the obsessive-compulsive worshippers who swear by the \u201clife-changing magic of tidying up\u201d, the reward is a neatly stacked drawer, a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.popsugar.com\/moms\/Photos-Marie-Kondo-Folding-Method-45675301\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fresh take on folding<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, improved relationships, and a designated place where you\u2019ll <\/span><b>always<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> find your keys. Who doesn\u2019t want that?!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But before carting away the garbage bags of clothes and the boxful of books, there\u2019s the underlying message: stuff does not make us happy. By using the \u201cKonMari\u201d method of piling everything by category rather than location, we are faced with the honest truth of what we own, not to mention the realisation of time, energy, and environmental resources that has gone into producing these goods, many of them unwanted. When our garages, closets, or unreachable shelves are filled to the brim, so are the Earth\u2019s natural resources. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So are you ready to Kondo? The message on the paper bags reads: &#8220;Trendy today &#8211; Trash tomorrow&#8221;.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the heart of the KonMari method is asking yourself: \u2018does it spark joy?\u2019 As a contender for mantra of 2019, it makes sense. Why do we buy unnecessary things only for it to take up both physical and mental space? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether it\u2019s a Black Friday, Cyber Monday, or Singles Day sale, \u201cjoy\u201d is not stemmed from shopping and owning the latest \u201cit\u201d products. Today\u2019s trends are tomorrow\u2019s trash, and global fast fashion brands are churning out more clothes than the planet can handle. Rivers and oceans are used as a dumping ground for hazardous chemicals, materials like polyester shed micro-plastic fibres that don\u2019t break down and instead leak into our oceans, and the people behind making our clothes are often under poor working conditions and are paid unfairly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What we need instead is a cultural sea change where we truly value our goods and keep them for as long as possible. Movements such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.makesmthng.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make Smthng<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fashionrevolution.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fashion Revolution<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are all about bringing people together and hosting workshops that teach communities how to repair, recycle, reuse, and upcycle, showing how all kinds of immaterial values can be gained if we start making and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/shortcuts\/2019\/jan\/13\/the-no-buy-movement-could-you-give-up-buying-clothes-and-beauty-products\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">buying less<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Shopping for short-lived trends or a fun clothes swap with your friends &#8211; what sparks more joy? <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>We\u2019re living in a crisis of convenience<\/b><\/h2>\n<lite-youtube style=\"background-image: url('https:\/\/i.ytimg.com\/vi\/pX0zVKbbVqM\/hqdefault.jpg');\" videoid=\"pX0zVKbbVqM\" params=\"rel=0\"><\/lite-youtube>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every single minute, the equivalent of a truckload of plastic enters the ocean, harming marine life and entering seafood supply chains around the world. While it is often thought that \u00a0recycling is part of the solution, the fact is that only <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/advances.sciencemag.org\/content\/3\/7\/e1700782\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nine percent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the plastics ever created have actually been recycled, and places in the global south often become a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/press-release\/19566\/recycling-from-developed-world-dumped-in-malaysia-and-left-to-rot\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dumping ground of waste<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from the developed world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What may have once been a tool of efficiency, single use plastic (and cheap plastic stuff for that matter) are a burden on the planet. For a long time, corporations have tried to pass the blame and responsibility to the public so they can continue churning out cheap throwaway packaging in the name of profit. But in 2019, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/story\/20090\/plastic-straws-are-just-the-tip-of-the-iceberg\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">companies like Coca-Cola, Pepsi, Unilever, Procter &amp; Gamble, and Nestle<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> need to make real commitments to reduce their production of throwaway plastics immediately.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Living <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/greenpeace\/10-things-youve-always-wanted-to-ask-about-living-zero-waste-bd7c0c258ecd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">zero waste<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/entry\/single-use-plastic-backlash_us_5c38e284e4b0922a21d4b6df?fbclid=IwAR0DRcXvz78LCju_vY93zF9ao1QM91tSkYmogejbK0clhBefgdJgaIXbJIk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">searching for sustainable alternatives<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is as achievable as spending a weekend cleaning out your room. After all what what does \u201cjoy\u201d look like \u2013 an ocean full of fish or an ocean full of plastic? <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Image means nothing<\/b><\/h2>\n<lite-youtube style=\"background-image: url('https:\/\/i.ytimg.com\/vi\/CU3JFIiDO5Q\/hqdefault.jpg');\" videoid=\"CU3JFIiDO5Q\" params=\"rel=0\"><\/lite-youtube>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is there a heaven for forgotten gadgets? With the amount of smartphones and other non-stop evolving tech products on the market it would seem so. Instead, \u201cgadget heaven\u201d is the back of a drawer, tangled up in a sea of unusable USB cables and a landmine of cracked screens.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This year, Apple is already apparently set to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/davidphelan\/2019\/01\/11\/apple-iphone-11-3-phones-including-one-with-3-cameras-last-iphone-with-lcd-screen-iphone-xi\/#6ef7f6b457df\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">release three new versions of the iPhone<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, despite the fact that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2018\/nov\/16\/does-apples-sales-slump-mean-the-company-has-finally-peaked\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Apple sales are lacklustre<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with customers feeling overwhelmed and unimpressed with upgrading or purchasing something that doesn\u2019t seem any different than their existing device. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fed up, citizens in the EU and parts of the US are calling for the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/science-environment-46797396\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cright to repair\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to force manufacturers to make products designed to last. When Apple admits that it <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/time.com\/5081679\/apple-apologizes-iphone-slowdown-controversy-battery-price\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">deliberately has been slowing down older iPhones<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or Samsung designs <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/press-release\/7450\/apple-samsung-products-among-least-repairable-in-new-greenpeace-assessment-of-tech-brands\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">non-replaceable batteries<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, companies like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ifixit.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">iFixit<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are empowering consumers who are demanding quality rather than brand new and shiny. What would bring joy?
