{"id":20647,"date":"2019-02-01T18:19:13","date_gmt":"2019-02-01T18:19:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/?p=20647"},"modified":"2019-11-06T09:47:32","modified_gmt":"2019-11-06T08:47:32","slug":"their-livelihood-depended-on-the-river-but-its-waters-are-now-toxic-mud","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/story\/20647\/their-livelihood-depended-on-the-river-but-its-waters-are-now-toxic-mud\/","title":{"rendered":"Their livelihood depended on the river, but its waters are now toxic mud"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last Friday, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/story\/20503\/the-city-is-weeping-the-aftermath-of-environmental-disaster-in-brumadinho-brazil\/https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/story\/20503\/the-city-is-weeping-the-aftermath-of-environmental-disaster-in-brumadinho-brazil\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a tailing dam <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from an iron ore mine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Brumadinho<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Brazil, collapsed, releasing a<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lmost 13 million cubic metres of mining waste. The toxic sludge <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">swept the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">region. So far, 110 people have been confirmed dead and over 230 are still missing. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Patax\u00f3 H\u00e3-h\u00e3-h\u00e3e Indigenous people are among the communities affected by the disaster. Their faces wore the strain of a community struggling to find a way forward out of tragedy. They told us that the stretch of the Paraopeba River that passes by their village is contaminated with toxic waste from Vale&#8217;s dam, and they can no longer fish or bathe in it. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;At first, we were hit by desperation because a similar tragedy has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/archive-international\/en\/news\/Blogs\/makingwaves\/Minas-gerais-mining-dam-collapse-mud-flood-rio-doce\/blog\/54787\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">happened before<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and we all know the consequences of that,&#8221; said Werymerry. She\u2019s referring to the mining dam collapse in Mariana \u2014also in the state of Minas Gerais \u2014 in 2015, that killed 21 people, destroying \u00a0a river and the livelihoods of hundreds of people. That dam was also operated by Vale. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;We gathered the most vulnerable people in our village and took them to the top of the hill until we could assess what the real situation was. Seated on a wooden stool at the entrance of her <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">oca<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 a typical dwelling of Indigenous peoples from South America \u2014 she mourned over the latest events. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;It&#8217;s such a painful tragedy. Many people died, and so did the fish that were our main source of food. Now you can&#8217;t catch a fish and eat it. The waters of the river turned into toxic mud. What will become of us?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the bank of the Paraopeba River, the smell of dead fish made me nauseous. To reduce the strong odor and avoid the mosquitoes, the village residents are burying the fish. Without their primary source of food and water supply, they are relying on donations. One collected as soon as they learned of the collapse, when the mud had not yet reached the village, and the other, two days later, when the mining waste reached their village. The color contrast is shocking, ranging from almost crystalline to an earthy brown. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;The Earth is vomiting. She is sick. Because, as the Chief Hay\u00f4 told me, &#8220;if there&#8217;s no nature, we can&#8217;t be the Patax\u00f3 people.&#8221; <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our visit to the Na\u00f4 Xoh\u00e3 village was supported by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cimi.org.br\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cimi<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the Indigenous Missionary Council, which is a body under the National Conference of Bishops of Brazil &#8211; CNBB.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i>Mariana Campos is a storyteller at Greenpeace Brazil.
