And in some cases in school canteens. It could have ended up on your plate. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is the latest of many scandals over the years to come out of industrial meat production. Previous ones included <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/archive.onearth.org\/articles\/2013\/12\/you-wont-believe-the-crap-literally-that-factory-farms-feed-to-cattle\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mad cow disease<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.foodsafetynews.com\/2014\/09\/danish-listeria-outbreak-claims-15-victims\/#.WNJjnBLytTY\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">listeria, <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/david-kirby\/mexican-lawmaker-factory_b_191579.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">swine flu<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. At the core of these crises is the hunger for cheap meat t<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">o feed the<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">greedy industrial system that is intent on bending the rules, as well as poor government oversight. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Looking at the sheer scale of industrialised meat production, it is only a matter of time before the next scandal will hit the headlines.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Poland alone, more than 2,000 chickens, 42 pigs, and 3 cows are killed every minute. According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/act.gp\/poza_kontrola\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">data <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from veterinary inspections, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">22% of cattle and 35% of pigs sent to slaughter within a year were diagnosed with diseases, lesions and other causes that could make the meat unhealthy for human consumption. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">99.9% of that livestock was still released for consumption. We need more transparency and better regulation. But even more than that, we need to transform our food system into one that is healthy for people and planet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The good news?
