{"id":21045,"date":"2019-02-22T03:58:17","date_gmt":"2019-02-22T03:58:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/?p=21045"},"modified":"2019-11-06T09:47:31","modified_gmt":"2019-11-06T08:47:31","slug":"school-strikes-take-off-as-legacy-from-grandfather-of-climate-science","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/story\/21045\/school-strikes-take-off-as-legacy-from-grandfather-of-climate-science\/","title":{"rendered":"School strikes take off as legacy from \u2018grandfather of climate science\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The death of one of the world\u2019s leading climate scientists this week and the swiftly expanding school climate strikes is symbolic of a generational baton change in the fight against global warming.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_21046\" style=\"width: 1210px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21046\" class=\"size-full wp-image-21046\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-international-stateless\/2019\/02\/68bbaade-gp0stt118.jpg\" alt=\"Youth Strike 4 Climate, London. \u00a9 Kristian Buus\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-international-stateless\/2019\/02\/68bbaade-gp0stt118.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-international-stateless\/2019\/02\/68bbaade-gp0stt118-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-international-stateless\/2019\/02\/68bbaade-gp0stt118-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-international-stateless\/2019\/02\/68bbaade-gp0stt118-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-international-stateless\/2019\/02\/68bbaade-gp0stt118-510x340.jpg 510w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-21046\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">London&#8217;s school children go on strike and take to the streets to protest about climate change (Feb 2019).<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More than 40 years after <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/02\/19\/obituaries\/wallace-broecker-dead.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wallace Smith Broecker<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> published his landmark 1975 paper \u2018<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Climatic Change: Are We on the Brink of a Pronounced Global Warming?\u2019 the world is still to set into action a global plan to prevent climate chaos.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While close to 200 countries reached the Paris Climate Agreement in 2015 and adopted a set of rules governing climate action at the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/press-release\/20056\/cop24-ends-without-firm-promises-to-raise-climate-action-and-ambition\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UN climate talks in Katowice (COP24)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> last December, they have so far failed to commit to accelerated climate action.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This ongoing political inaction is what drives the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/fridaysforfuture.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">burgeoning school climate strikes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> inspired by Swedish girl Greta Thunberg, who boldly warned leaders at COP24 that \u201cp<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">eople will not wait for change, we will tell them change is coming\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<lite-youtube style=\"background-image: url('https:\/\/i.ytimg.com\/vi\/VFkQSGyeCWg\/hqdefault.jpg');\" videoid=\"VFkQSGyeCWg\" params=\"rel=0\"><\/lite-youtube>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But Broecker \u2013<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/science\/2019\/feb\/19\/climate-change-science-pioneer-wallace-smith-broecker-dies\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">who passed away in a New York City hospital this week at the age of 87<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 did not get to see the concerted climate action he called for throughout much of his working life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the 1970s<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, when Broecker correctly predicted that rising carbon dioxide emissions would lead to atmospheric warming &#8211; and in doing so broke with now <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidescience.org\/news\/my-1975-cooling-world-story-doesnt-make-todays-climate-scientists-wrong\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">famously incorrect<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> predictions of global cooling &#8211; the impacts of climate change were not yet visible.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Throughout the 1980s, as the scientific consensus on global warming increased and other leading scientists such as<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/climate-consensus-97-per-cent\/2018\/jun\/25\/30-years-later-deniers-are-still-lying-about-hansens-amazing-global-warming-prediction\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">James Hansen called for political action<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, governments debated and discussed the threat of climate change. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the same time, sceptics and fossil fuel companies consistently <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sowed doubt about climate science and sought to undermine solutions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Talk and political inaction has followed in the two decades since, while temperatures have continued to rise. The thermometer represents the need to cap the global temperature rise at 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre industrial levels in order to prevent catastrophic climate change.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This year has kicked off where 2018 ended, with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/public.wmo.int\/en\/media\/news\/2019-starts-extreme-high-impact-weather\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">extreme weather <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in many parts of the world<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">record heat, wildfires and rainfall in South America and Australasia, dangerous and extreme cold in North America and heavy snowfall in the Alps and Himalayas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Climate change is the greatest threat humanity has faced and the urgency of action has never been greater. Last October, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/press-release\/18839\/ipcc-report-points-to-stark-choices-ahead-but-reason-for-hope-and-action-greenpeace\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UN\u2019s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> warned that we have just 12 years left to save the climate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But there is hope. The inspirational climate strikes from<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GretaThunberg\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Greta Thunberg<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AlexandriaV2005\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alexandria Villasenor<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the US and many others like them show the kind of resolve and sense of purpose required. There is still time to avert chaos, but it requires the world\u2019s politicians and corporations to accept and embrace the responsibility of action.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The equation is simple, the challenge is great, but the possibilities endless. G<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lobal CO2 emissions can and must be halved by 2030<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> before falling to net zero by 2050 at the latest<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although leaders failed to commit to heightened climate action at COP24 \u2013 just two months after the IPCC\u2019s dire warning \u2013 they can rectify that failure now and in the lead-up to the UN Secretary-General\u2019s Climate Summit in September by ramping up action.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the new generation walks out of school and takes to the streets carrying forth the warnings of climate science forerunners such as Broecker, it\u2019s time our politicians showed the same courage and vision and acted in solidarity with them.
