What do you think they see when they look at Patagonia? Some of the world\u2019s last untapped, hardest-to-access oil and gas? Dollar signs? Oil companies, including Shell and Total, are using an illegal dump where the waste is discarded directly onto the soil, close to a residential area and one of the region\u2019s major water supplies. In December, after a six-month investigation into the activities at this site, we wrote to the oil companies in question to inform them of the results of our investigation, and gave them fair warning that we were going public with what we had unveiled. The landfill is also located 5 km away from the A\u00f1elo community, 4.9 km from agricultural fields and 3.7 km from the Neuquen River, which infringes Neuquen\u2019s Provincial Law, and Argentina\u2019s General Law on Environment.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If it sounds all too familiar, that\u2019s because it is. You\u2019ve seen \u2014 and stopped \u2014\u00a0this very thing many times before. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over the last few years, millions of people just like you have come together to put an end to similar reckless behaviour by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/story\/7022\/you-did-it-shell-abandons-arctic-drilling\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shell in the Alaskan Arctic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. You took to the streets and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/act\/join-the-wave-of-resistance-against-pipelines\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rose up against big banks financing climate-killing pipelines <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that snake across North America, infringing on the rights of Indigenous Peoples and poisoning water supplies at every turn. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And when Total tried to drill the precious <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/story\/19833\/2-million-people-defended-the-amazon-reef-and-won\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amazon Reef, two million of you gathered from across the world to fight back \u2014\u00a0and won<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">! In 2016, after immense public pressure, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.offshoreenergytoday.com\/bp-withdraws-plans-for-great-australian-bight-drilling\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BP withdrew its plans to drill in the Great Australian Bight <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014\u00a0and Equinor keeps delaying. And, after nearly a decade of fighting Big Oil in New Zealand, you helped bring about a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/new-zealand\/explore\/resist\/deep-sea-oil-timeline\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ban on new offshore oil and gas licenses<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">! <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This peaceful action today is part of a <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.peoplevsoil.org\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">global movement of people all around the world<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who are standing up against Big Oil and demanding accountability from some of the world\u2019s richest and most powerful corporations \u2014\u00a0like Shell and Total \u2014\u00a0that are at the forefront of blocking climate justice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/science-environment-45775309\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A dramatic report issued in October by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, laid out in no uncertain terms that we are way off track for limiting global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees, and in fact <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/unearthed.greenpeace.org\/2018\/10\/08\/1-5-un-ipcc-special-report-explained\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heading toward catastrophic 3 degree change. <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This means millions of lives at stake, a human migrant crisis on a scale we\u2019ve never seen, massive drought, food shortages &#8230; I could go on, but I think we all get the hella depressing, over-the-top gist.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_21088\" style=\"width: 1210px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21088\" class=\"wp-image-21088 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-international-stateless\/2019\/02\/02167fac-gp0stt1sy_medium_res.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-international-stateless\/2019\/02\/02167fac-gp0stt1sy_medium_res.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-international-stateless\/2019\/02\/02167fac-gp0stt1sy_medium_res-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-international-stateless\/2019\/02\/02167fac-gp0stt1sy_medium_res-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-international-stateless\/2019\/02\/02167fac-gp0stt1sy_medium_res-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-international-stateless\/2019\/02\/02167fac-gp0stt1sy_medium_res-453x340.jpg 453w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-21088\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The toxic landfill site, equivalent in size to 15 football fields, is used by oil companies that are fracking Patagonia.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is the moment we must urgently keep oil in the ground \u2014 not open new fossil fuel frontiers like Patagonia. Already <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/grist.org\/article\/meet-the-12-year-old-activist-taking-politicians-to-task-over-climate-change\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">youth around the world<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are rising up to demand climate action, and their bravery is showing politicians we are not willing to wait any longer.
