I had to take food for them, as the forest alone can no longer nourish them. This is because so much of the S\u00e1pmi forests, the S\u00e1mi homeland, has been logged. Reindeer have nourished the people of this land for thousands of years. We have continued the traditions of our ancestors, who first arrived here because of the reindeer, the hunting, and the fishing. Our traditional culture and way of living have been passed on from generation to generation. \u00a0But now logging, mining and other forms of heavy land use are threatening all of this.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/arcticcorridor.fi\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A proposed plan for the Arctic railway<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> would cut through our pasture, spoiling our forest, our fresh water supply and simultaneously destroying our past, our future, and our identity. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lvm.fi\/-\/report-on-the-arctic-railway-completed-998125\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> commissioned by the Ministry of Transport and Communications made it clear that the railway would not be economically viable and would have irreversible consequences to the lives of the S\u00e1mi people. Despite knowing this, the regional authority Lapin liitto, wants to include the railway in the regional land use plan. I know we are not alone, and this empowers our community every day. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You, dear reader, are one of the thousands of people around the world who continue to stand with us and give us the power to keep on fighting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last autumn hundreds of S\u00e1mi gathered to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/press-release\/18253\/railway-logging-threaten-sami\/\">draw a red line<\/a> against industrial exploitation of S\u00e1pmi. Greenpeace and representatives of the indigenous peoples of Canada and New Zealand supported and joined the activities. More than 10,000 people have already shown their support. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/act.greenpeace.org\/page\/29695\/petition\/1\">Join them<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jussa Seuruj\u00e4rvi is a reindeer herder in S\u00e1pmi and is part of the Muddusj\u00e4rvi reindeer herding cooperative. Muddusj\u00e4rvi is situated in the part of the S\u00e1pmi forest that politically belongs to Finland.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"EmptyMessage\">Block content is empty.
